In Whangārei’s Maunu, Khane Bahar South Indian Restaurant’s become a local favourite for families, drawing regulars with flavours that invite return visits. Its kitchen keeps faith with the comforting rhythm of Indian cooking, layering spice with a measured hand and letting aromatics do the heavy lifting.

The first bites set the tone. A crisp vegetable samosa gives way to green peas and nuts lifted by tamarind, while samosa chat’s a joyful tangle of textures, chickpea and yoghurt tumbled with veggies and mint. It’s food that balances tang, crunch and warmth with effortless charm.

Curries arrive with familiar, crowd-pleasing depth - butter chicken and chicken tikka masala for creamy comfort, lamb rogan josh and lamb korma for headier, aromatic gravies. There’s an Indo-Chinese thread too, from veg or chicken Manchurian to chilli chicken or prawns, offering a different kind of savoury kick. Plant-based diners are well looked after with chana Madras and varied vegetable-based curry dishes.

Bring friends, bring family, and settle in for a generous, unhurried meal that lingers long after the last spoonful. Book your spot and taste why locals try once, then love it forever - a little southern spice, a lot of Northland nice!
