A Northland favourite since 1996, Shiraz Indian and European Family Restaurant Dargaville carries forward a story that began in Whangarei. Chef-owner Jaswant Singh Minhas, originally from the Punjab, first joined the team while studying business management before taking the helm in 1998. His passion for authenticity runs through the kitchen, where traditional tandoori ovens impart that unmistakable char and smokiness to naan, meats and vegetarian tandoori specialities.

The menu roams widely yet remains grounded in classic technique. Comforting stalwarts such as chicken tikka masala and butter chicken share the stage with deeper, spicier notes in rogan josh and vindaloo, while prawn masala, paneer makhani and palak paneer offer rich, aromatic detours.

Fragrant biryani arrives layered and moreish, and tandoori breads – garlic naan and butter naan among them – invite generous tearing and sharing. True to its “Indian and European” promise, fish and chips and a hearty sirloin steak sit happily alongside, with a playful nod in the form of a chicken tikka masala pizza.

With chefs who have honed their craft in some of India’s top hotels, the team continues to refine and refresh while keeping the soul of the cuisine intact. Settle in for generous flavours and an easygoing, family-friendly rhythm.
