Burger Bro has travelled a long road for a bloody good burger. Born as Mama Kay's in a trailer on Christchurch’s Cathedral Square, it rolled into Hamilton with the same simple promise: make the best possible handmade burgers. From a 5m² hole in the wall on Victoria Street to a bigger, hard-won home a few doors down, their journey is written in renovation dust, grit and plenty of smiles.
The food speaks in bold, old-fashioned tones, all sizzle and crunch with a modern wink. Nostalgists gravitate to the Classic Burger, while the Big Jake piles on crispy onion rings, bacon and smoky BBQ swagger. Chicken has its own fan club, too, from the straightforward charms of the Chicken Legend with aoli to the Big Chicken Kay-Huna, where grilled pineapple and Habanero sauce turn up the sunshine. Veggie delights are treated with the same respect, and a Kiwi nod appears in fish and chips.
On the side, there is mischief: onion rings by the fistful, Dragon Fried Chicken in a ginger and garlic crunch, and loaded fries that flirt with excess — think Canadian poutine or OMG Fries with melted Colby and all the trimmings. Unusual shakes add a sweet grin.
The atmosphere is relaxed, generous and served with a little wisdom. Take a seat, exhale, and taste the difference of fresh handmade food — life is good. Slide in for a bite, stay for the banter, and make it a bro-mance.
