For modern Japanese fusion food in an intimate setting look no further than Tatsumi.

Located in the heart of Queenstown, on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, it is decorated in contemporary style, with dark wooden surfaces and minimalist nods to Japanese culture such as silk lampshades and traditional art.

Having spent more than 20 years crafting his skill, chef owner Koichi has developed a modern Japanese fusion menu that draws inspiration from European cooking techniques. Expect classic sushi presented in imaginative ways and French desserts that use Asian ingredients, such as green tea and yuzu juice.

Get the full experience with the degustation menu for dinner or go a la carte at lunch time. Favourites include fresh sashimi, small plates such as calamari tempura and deep-fried tofu, and beautifully marbled wagyu beef steak. There is also a hot pot menu.

The drinks list is equally innovative, with sophisticated cocktails inspired by the signs of the zodiac. There is also an excellent selection of sake and Japanese whisky, as well as a wine cellar well-stocked with Kiwi labels.

You are guaranteed a culinary education as well as a top meal when you eat at Tatsumi. Book your table now and let the journey begin!

Wow! What a fantastic evening. Absolutely loved the food. The flavors of an integration of Japanese care and attention to details and European ideas was absolutely out of this world. The service was delicate and attentive. The drinks list was extensive, filled with wine, exciting cocktails, and a range of Japanese sakes, whiskeys and more. I’ll be dreaming of our next visit to Tatsumi. What an amazing night.

My husband is a chef and has wanted to dine at Tatsumi since it's Christchurch days. Last night we finally had the pleasure of enjoying the Tatsumi experience. We had the degustation as per first table conditions and as a non-foodie I was nervous! I'm not an adventurous eater and shy away from "raw" and unfamiliar foods. However the food was delicious. The salmon and tuna melted in your mouth, the soft shell crab was to die for, the green tea dessert such a tasty finish to the meal. We LOVED our experience here. The staff were friendly, the food kept on coming and we had a fantastic time. Thanks First Table and Tatsumi!

Wow! An excellent meal, expertly prepared and beautifully presented. Service was gracious and superb. The generous degustation menu on offer gave us a chance to try a little of a wide variety of delicious bites, all of which we enjoyed. Plenty of very tasty dishes, served at a nice pace. The drinks menu is extensive and well-priced. We love food from Japan, and have been to all the other Japanese restaurants in the area... except this one. Thank you, FirstTable, for introducing us to a new favorite!

INCREDIBLE! The dinner degustation menu was divine....every dish as beautifully presented and as delicious as the one before. All the staff were polite, friendly...we weren’t rushed at all. The drinks selection is huge, I highly recommend the cocktail list. I will certainly be back dining at Tatsumi again soon.

WOW. What an absolutely amazing dining experience. The level of service and attention was top notch. The Degustation menu was the best food I’ve had in a long time (even after having spent time in Japan). The intricacies in each dish were crazy! Favourites would be the miso oyster, the beef cheeks and the sesame creme brûlée. The added little extras like the beautiful serving dishes, the thermos beer mug to keep it cold, and the box with the bill and mints just added to this special experience. I would HIGHLY recommend this restaurant, and would happily pay full price on a special occasion.

Exceptional and exquisite experience. The food was outstanding in both taste and presentation. Stand outs were the chawan mushy, pork ribs and the scallops. We really enjoyed the sake samplers too. The QT cloudy sake was my fave. This restaurant is a wonderful addition to Queenstown and is set to become our favourite place to dine. Many thanks to the team for amazing food and warm service.

The 7 course experience was nice but not sure I'd do it again. The whitebait in the appetizer was nice but didn't look very appetizing when you can see all the little eyes looking at you. The presentation of the dishes were fun and the food was good but not amazing. Loved the waitress wearing a traditional kimono and the hot towels at the start. Thanks for having us :)

O M G !! I had not read the special conditions correctly, so in my mind we were just going out for " sushi",

Tatsumi blew my MIND!!,

Every dish that came out ( nicely spaced) was more delightful than the one before, I really can't do the menu justice as words aren't enough, it was incredible and the nicest meal I have had in my whole life!
Even every little plate and dish it was brought out to you on were beautiful
The staff couldn't have been sweeter and more helpful...

What a meal!!!!
From start to finish it was delicious - trying Japanese food for the first time the degustation menu was the perfect amount of new flavours to try and enjoy! The presentation of each course was stunning both in how it was laid out on the plate and actual the plate itself - just stunning!!
Have been raving about it since and we will back again!

Exceptional in every respect. Highlights for me was the green tea fondant & the wagyu beef sushi. The Wagyu was melt in your mouth tender. Lovely team of waitresses. Dishes were explained clearly & service was there as and when you needed. I can see why they are rated #1 on Trip Advisor. +++++ highly recommend to all Japanese food lovers. The degustation was great!

The food was fabulous and the service very authentically high end Japanese. The only thing I would highlight is that I think the wording on first table could be clearer that the first table deal is ONLY able to be used if ordering the degustation menu - Whereas i accidentally read it that it is allowed to be used for that but could also be used for a la Carte. Wasn’t a problem tho but there was ALOT of food and most of it delicious

Do not miss out on this experience amazing food gracious efficient staff and the cleanest restaurant bathroom I have ever seen . My sister and I agree we will definitely be back and will be telling our friends about you. Thank you once again. Jil

Had a fantastic meal here! The food was quite simply beautiful - art on a plate but it also tasted superb! The sashimi was melt in your mouth fresh. Lovely ambiance and excellent service. I loved the beautiful serve ware that the food was presented on too. We had the 7 course degustation and felt completely full afterwards (not always the case with japanese restaurants).
We can't wait to go back!
