Food was great & service too. Would've been better if the restaurant location wasn't in the middle of tourists coming & going with check in & out otherwise a good night.

This was our first visit to 165. At first I wasn’t sure about this place but I soon got the hang of how things are. There is a lot of activity and it’s very easy to sit back and people watch. Not sure what the hotel is offering but there were a lot of guests checking in and passing by! Don’t come here for a quiet romantic meal but if you want to chill out, relax and have a laugh this is the place to come. The food was good and there is definitely something for everyone on the menu from smaller budget items to an excellent and perfectly cooked rack of Canterbury lamb. I’ve planned a repeat visit to sample this one again. Oh and then there’s a very reasonably priced old school ice cream. Great coffee finished the night. Special mention goes to Keith who was running the bar and restaurant almost single handed. What a treasure this man is. He is incredibly attentive and efficient but has a wicked sense of humour that really kept us on our toes. 165 you need to keep him! All in all a fun night out.

Very nice food and excellent service. Great place to pop into for a meal before our movie. Would it have known about it were it not for first table. We will return!

Food tasted great. Didn't come out too fast or too slow. Service diminished a tad as the night got busier and we seemed to have been forgotten about but other than that, was a lovely atmosphere. I recommend the smoked salmon entre dish.

The food was fantastic beef cheeks just melted in your mouth and the sauce was divine.
Only downfall was the waitress no customer service skills, went onto tell us the specials the fish of the day is Takahi but then bluntly mentioned that it always is!
The other waiter much more pleasant

We enjoyed our meal but thought the menu was limited would have liked more choice. So convenient in town close to Hoyts next we'll combine the two.

Yes it is the lobby/large foyer of the motel, but yes the food is very good. The service is polite and adequate. A good place to take a friend for a meal rather than for a night out

Lovely night out with friends. This Cafe and bBar is part of the Breakfree Hotel so a little different to the normal cafe and bar. Service from the gentleman working there was first class.

Although the place was busy, we got excellent service and I felt the staff went out of their way to make sure our 2 children were happy, offering kids menus, colouring in, and chatting to them directly. Really family friendly.

The food snob in me was reluctant as it’s at a budget hotel but the tight ass in me couldn’t go past the 50%off!!! The food was AMAZING. We had 3 courses and they were all excellent. Friendly service and the food came out in a timely manner. Absolutely recommend this place!!

Booked this at the last minute, it was our first time at this restaurant and we'll definitely be going back! Our waiter Kieth was amazing, he was informative, friendly and fun! Great food and although a Tuesday night it was reasonably busy.

My daughter and I dined at Cafe & Bar 165 on a Friday night, although this is in the foyer part of the Breakfree Hotel on Cashel Street, it is spacious with plenty of tables are areas to eat. The place was alive with tourists coming back from skiing and other busy days out exploring our lovely city. The staff were very attentive and explained because of the nature of the cafe that table service was not offered if they were busy but the staff we dealt went out of their way to offer table service and were knowledgeable and friendly. The cafe had a great selection of drinks and cocktails. We ordered the soup and garlic bread to start with, the carrot and pumpkin soup was creamy and tasty. The Beef cheek dish for main totally melted in your mouth it was accompanied by a medley of roast vegetable, yams, potato, courgette, kumara, carrot. onion (great to see them using local produce), the dish was topped with the most delicious finger licking jus. My daughter had a delicious Caesar Salad with chicken, the chicken was tender and the dressing tasty. Generous portions meant we couldn't quite fit in dessert. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at Cafe and Bar 165, parking was easy in the Lichfield Street car parking building, a three minute walk to the cafe.

Seemed odd being in the hotel foyer, but we had seen the reviews and knew what to expect, it was actually quite nice to people watch!
The food was ecxellent as was the service, a little hickup with the bill, First Tables was forgotton, however the staff were on to it before we thought to ask. So well done them.
