If it wasn't for First Table, I would not have discovered and tried this restaurant! Service was superb and warm and the food great! The fried chicken was really crispy my picky little girl happily ate up! We enjoyed and will definitely come back for the Happy Hour. Thanks First Table:)

My partner and I had a great time at The Culpeper. With its rustic ambience and port-side proximity, it is a great place to enjoy an early dinner as the sun begins to set.

In this case, we had booked a table for two for dinner. We found the menu to have a good variety of starters to choose from as well as larger dishes to follow. We tried and loved the crispy chicken and brocolli salad. I ordered the angus beef fillet and my partner ordered the grilled chicken salad. We both thoughouly enjoyed our meals and the service was prompt without being too prompt.

Overall, we had a nice experience and would recommend The Culpeper as a great viaduct restaurant to choose when going for a meal together or with a group of friends.

Was a bit nervous to take my out-of-town relatives to a restaurant I’d never been to before (I usually do tried and true options) but I needn’t have worried. The food was delicious. And upon another person’s review I ordered the brisket - phenomenal. The pork cheek scrumpet starter was a definite hit too. Thanks.

Had a lovely meal here recently. Our server was welcoming and seated us on the patio. The menu was explained and then it was time to choose. I think the wording small plates is deceptive as the fried chicken and shrimp tacos were both very generous servings and very tasty, with the shrimp taco having some spice to them.
We opted for mains of ribs (500g) merguez corn dog, a good old cheeesburger and the brisket. All dishes got the thumbs up, the burger was cooked as requested and thankfully not in a brioche bun. The ribs were tangy and sticky and the corn dogs went well with the cauliflower side dish. The brisket was melt in your mouth and matched well with the habanero dressing.

Best restaurant in Viaduct!
Amazing food & 5star service!
I had steak with onion & veggies sauce (not sure of the name) - I thought the combination of the steak & the sauce is a bit weird as usually I would have gravy on my steak! That sauce is perfect comb with my steak! My partner had salmon (omg, when we saw it, we both look at each other & thought it might be a disaster! Salmon is floating on soup with 2 mussels. - my partner said it was the best salmon ever! I don’t even need to ask her as I can see that she finished the food, nothing left on her plate :)
Our desserts: Salted caramel apple pie, Banoffee Pie and ‘Pie of the week’- I think it’s raspberry with chocolate. - winner of the dessert goes to Banoffee pie! Best ever pie!
Only thing to improve is the scoop of ice cream, as I finished it halfway of my pie. I told the waitress about it & she acknowledged, she will inform the kitchen. Very good response on my feedback!

Kudos to the chef and to the waitresses.

We absolutely LOVED our time here!!

It was a good level of busy on Thursday night, there was a lovely vibrant yet cosy atmosphere. We were given a corner so it felt intimate enough that my friends could hear me speak, yet there was enough space for us to share stories without fearing that others could hear us.

The food was great! We had the 200g steak, which was beautifully grilled to a medium rare. I would also recommend the prawn tacos! We also ordered the roast chicken, which was juicy for a roast, but the other two dishes were so brilliant that the chicken wasn't memorable.

Make sure you stay for dessert!!!!! Definitely try the banoffee pie! We had it with the hazelnut praline icecream, and it was a perfect end to the meal. We had also ordered the key lime pie with a vanilla icecream, however I felt that it was more a lemon meringue than key lime. I didn't really like the key lime pie, the crust was a wee bit soggy, but that might also have been because I had such high expectations after the banoffee.

Overall, this place was a solid experience and we can't wait to go back!

Wow! super impressed. This was my 1st booking with First Table. I took my friend here for her Bday lunch - so impressed to be greeted with a Birthday wish on arrival they actually read my booking request! Food flavour & presentation outstanding we also appreciated good portion sizes, all delivered efficiently with just the right amount of table service. There were great seating options for a water view or fireplace inside or out. Already planning our return visit next time for all the Happy Hour specials....this place rocks on so many levels! Thanks for a lovely lunch really made our day :-) Jo

What a great choice .. just a short stroll along Princes Wharf is Culpeper’s and well worth the visit. We had a selection of smaller plates to share (great portion sizes) and all delicious... squid tacos, Mac n cheese, crispy chicken wings, hush puppies ;) all was yum even if we did over order! The service was fantastic .. friendly, professional and efficient. We can’t wait to go back... with that lovely view out over the water, Culpeper’s is winning x

Fantastic. Food was fantastic, and a great range of different options. We devoured purple slaw, mac n cheese, the hush puppies, pork belly and ribs, and everything was fantastic. To cap it off, the best key lime pie I have ever eaten in Auckland. The quality of food for the price you pay, at a viaduct location, is amazing. I was flawed when I saw how cheap our bill was, I had to leave a tip because I felt guilty that we had eaten so well so cheaply.

The atmosphere is great. Obviously, any viaduct spot on a sunny day looking over the water is beautiful. But the decor of the restaurant is really cool as well. Our waitress was awesome, very friendly, fast, and showed a genuine interest in our day and how we were doing.

I have already recommended many people visit The Culpeper and will continue to do so.

It was a glorious Sunday evening and my sister and I had escaped our small children and headed out with our mum for an evening of good food and wine, as well as a trip to the theatre. We were given a warm and sunny table outside and, as we often do, pondered the menu for quite some time, the delicious sounding food on offer leaving us very undecided about which way to turn. The waiter was incredibly patient and helpful as he guided us through it. We decided on one large plate, a few small plates to share and some curly fries, along a glass of bubbles each, as we waited, and a glass of rose with our meal. The Smoked Pepper & Polenta Fried Chicken was crispy and delicious, the Alabama white BBQ sauce a perfect accompaniment to add a bit of zing. The Smoked Brisket Tacos were full of flavour and the BBQ Prawn Salad (with whole barbecued prawns) were refreshing and tasty. Our larger plate was the Boston Butt Pulled Pork which was superb and would’ve gone well in a potato bun, however, it was more than fine on its own, and the curly fries as our side, were more than enough. We were very impressed with the Culpeper and hope to return to try some more of their divine food.

We arrived on a wet winter evening and was greeted by a friendly waiter who sat us close to the warm crackling fireplace, which was a bonus! The menu looked good and we started off with some fresh oysters and delicious tuna poke. We then tucked into the crisp asian prawn tacos, crunchy fried chicken, tasty pulled pork and also the finely cooked 16hr smoked brisket. We ended the night with a couple servings of the bittersweet pecan pie and the mango custard donut that satisfied our sweet tooth. The staff looked after us all night and the service was excellent throughout. Well worth a visit if you haven't already.

I'm a chef and you should trust me when I say this is simply one of the best restaurants in Auckland. Great atmosphere, excellent service and all that jazz but the food, the food man!! Perfect flavour blends, beautiful rustic presentation, impeccable cook/serve time!

Outstanding service from all the waiters. Shared smoked brisket tacos as an entree. Delicious and good portions for sharing. Culpeper cheese burger with bacon added was amazing as were the pork spare ribs 500g. Both very generous portions (we struggled to finish but tasted so good we were reluctant to leave any). All food had a hint of spice especially the burger (not your usual bland burger). Simply delicious! Happy hour 4-7pm an added plus.

We had a friend come from out of town and wanted to finish her holiday with a lovely brunch. All comments on First Table pointed to Culpeper being a lovely place to do this... and it was. Set in the lively Viaduct area with a beautiful sunny morning, we sat outside watching the harbour activity. The menu has a great selection and even food that we normally wouldn't go for sounded tempting. We ended up trying something different and loved it. The service was impeccable too. We'll definitely be going back

We had an amazing time at the Culpeper for dinner last night. The service was amazing. We got a seat outside looking over the Spirit of Adventure ship and watching the early sunset around 6.30. Our waitress was very lovely - a German woman - who gave some great recommendations and really made us feel at home. The wine was lovely and also only $5 which is always a bonus. We would say that the food was good but not great. The brisket tacos were yummy and the salmon was perfectly cooked but none of the flavours blew me away and the prawns were under seasoned and over cooked. I would go back for drinks and snacks but probably not for dinner. All round though, we had a great time and the value was indisputable.

The restaurant was in an amazing location right on the waterfront. There was a first table set aside for us towards the back of the restaurant in the comfortable booth option. Our waitress Hope came to explain the menu and inclusions and she was always attentive. We found all the staff friendly even those who weren't our waiter would come and check on us which was a nice touch. We ordered a dozen oysters, pork hotdogs and prawn tacos for entree and pork and steak for main and all was delicious and cooked perfectly. A stand out was definitely the pork hotdogs for entree! We cannot wait to be back again

It was a great experience to book the first table on the Valentine’s Day at one of the most popular restaurants in town. I chose The Culpeper for my special birthday dinner. This was my first booking using First Table and I was impressed.

Thank you Culpeper staff - although we arrived slightly late due to the viaduct road works we were still welcomed for our booking. We liked the rustic and nautical atmosphere of the restaurant and being in close proximity to the water.

We thoroughly enjoyed the evening and our waitress was prompt without being too prompt. We enjoyed the crispy fried chicken and cauliflower salad as a small meal to begin with, followed by the half jerk chicken and market fish as our larger dishes. The food was tasty and cooked to perfection, the waitstaff were friendly, polite and helpful, and the atmosphere was great.

Would recommend this restaurant to friends and family and return sometime soon.

Oysters were very small so they probably save the small ones for the $2 special & First Table. We had the spicy fried chicken which wasn’t spicy at all to start. Mains we had the brisket which was delicious and the whole fish which was also very tasty. Service wasn’t great even though the restaurant was empty. Great location and views.

My son had the burger which he declared “was the best he had ever had” and I had the jerk chicken, which was delicious! We did not need it, but we could not resist the Mac n cheese, laden with smoked ham hock. Sensational. We shared a sundae to finish off, and it was a perfect ending to a fabulous dinner. I was disappointed mainly with the food. Atmosphere was nice, seating was ok (I did find the seats a bit uncomfortable), and service was ok. The waitress was lovely, but she was asked if the onions in a meal could be cooked and now raw and she said yes -this did not happen. My food was partially inedible, there was a large chunk of fat in my meat, more than 50% of my meat was fat. And one of the desserts was partially burnt and some of the pastry top was missing. I think if this was more of a pub my expectations would be low, but we've been told this place is amazing, however, we were left very disappointed and will not be rushing back again.

Busy Saturday visited my son's birthday dinner. Many waitress around but some of them did't have attention to customers. I saw very often 2 or 3 staff gathering and chatting rather than looking after customers. Many waitress walked beside my table but I need to catch them to order or asking something. However still valuable to have popular restaurant meals with good discount. Burger was huge and nice. We want to come back again.

Would definitely recommend The Culpeper. The food was delicious (especially the iceberg wedge side), and such good value. For two people, fried chicken, fries, ribs and iceberg wedge was plenty of food. A great selection of desserts too!

Note that you are not allowed to order happy hour drinks, even if you pay the full happy hour price (the terms and conditions on this point aren't very clear). We tried to, but were told if we wanted to order happy hour drinks we would have to finish our meal and settle that bill then move to the bar area and order happy hour drinks.

The moment we walked into the restaurant we were pretty much ignored until I had to ask a second time that we had a reservation. We were then seated and it felt like we were rushed the whole time, we were asked what we wanted to drink before we had even opened the drinks menu! My husband ordered Pinot Noir and it arrived cold, I’ve never heard of red wine being served cold, he used the candle to try and warm up his wine! The server then asked us what we wanted to eat, didn’t explain anything in the menu or go over any specials. The food was quite nice although the server did start clearing the table and asked us if we wanted mains before I had even finished my entree, I wasn’t impressed. Mains were lovely and once we were finished we were asked if we wanted desserts which we did. I started to order the desserts with the servers only to be told after I ordered that they had run out of the doughnuts - it was 6:35 on a Saturday night and they have run out already, that is very poor management, we got the feeling that they didn’t want to give us any as we were on first table, but that was wrong as I mentioned this when we paid the bill and the woman responded that they did fly out the door and they were very sorry we didn’t get to have the doughnuts. So instead of the doughnuts ordered pie and this arrived, clearly it was made the day before and had been microwaved as the bottom was wet and rubbery and the Apples were dried out and rubbery inside the pie, the pastry was not pleasant at all. Overall a very disappointing experience and will definitely not be returning.

We were made so welcome at The Culpeper, I'd made a quick call en route to let them know we were caught in Quay St traffic and would be a few minutes late - our reception was friendly & professional. We were led to a reserved table dowsed in late afternoon sun and beside the window where there was plenty to see on the pier outside. Drinks & food orders were taken promptly and I'd highly recommend trying their in house sodas, I had raspberry & lemon which came icy cold & topped with a zesty slice of freeze dried lemon & a handful of raspberries, the flavour was delicious, I'm usually a wine-with-dinner girl but I'd try their other sodas again in a heartbeat! Hubby & son enjoyed beers & our mains came out after a relaxing chat in the sun. Hubby & I ordered the crispy skinned salmon which came served in a tasty broth with kale & mussels, we both commented that it was filling and very flavoursome. Teenage son feasted on 1kg of sticky pork ribs which came complete with tongs to eat with and little side bucket of warm water & towel to refresh. The attention to our table was efficient but not rushed, water was filled regularly & plates were cleared away once we were finished. The staff were all super friendly & knew the menu well. Overall, a great experience. Thanks Culpeper - we'll be back!

A really disappointing experience at The Culpeper. My boyfriend and I were keen to try this place for his birthday dinner, and so we did thinking we had nabbed a good deal through First Table.

We were unfortunately met with hostile staff and poor quality food.

We arrived during the happy hour time, and I enquired about the cocktails on the happy hour menu. (I admit I had not read prior that the special conditions were that happy hour was not included in our first table deal) The waiter immediately was hostile and defensive, telling us we were not allowed the happy hour menu. He hadn’t explained why, so I was still unsure and said I was happy to pay full price. The waiter made me feel quite uncomfortable as if I was trying to cheapen our meal by taking advantage of happy hour as well as our first table deal. This encounter seriously hindered the mood of our entire dinner.

I feel as though the waiter didn’t believe that we belonged there, and it really showed in his attitude towards us vs other guests.

We ordered Oysters to start, all of which were shucked poorly, resulting in pieces of shell throughout.

Next was their fried chicken which was actually quite nice. The best of the night.
Mains were:
Pulled pork and slaw - Half of the pork was just fat. Served on a very narrow chopping board made for awkward eating.
Wagyu Cheeseburger with hand-cut chips - Burger buns were poor quality and not toasted, once again served on a chopping board, which generally wouldn't be an issue, however, the burger was very full of water for some reason. Half of the chips were dry and just tasted like an overcooked oven potato. The burger also had an odd spice to it, not something you'd expect with a cheeseburger.

Overall disappointed with both the service and the food. Even after paying half price for most of the meal, still didn't make up for the poor experience.
