Cool, colourful and with charismatic staff, Monsoon Poon is the sort of restaurant that makes any evening feel like a party. Decorated with an eclectic jumble of artefacts from across Asia, this is a feel-good destination for dinner and cocktails.

The food draws inspiration from across the Asian continent, with India, China, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines all well represented. Think banquet menus the whole crew will love, spicy options that will set your palate on fire, curries, noodles and plenty of veggie plates.

Grab a table and let the feast begin. Crowd pleasers include prawn wontons, beef rendang and fish tacos, while wok fried tofu and eggplant is served in a sichuan style clay pot, giving it an authentic twist. Feeling brave? Their signature firecracker chicken sliders with dynamite mayo are legendary… for those who dare!

A cold Southeast Asian beer or refreshing wine is the perfect contrast to all that chilli, while the cheeky cocktail menu includes serves such as the Suzy Wong, Singapore Sling and Poon Tang. Personally, we love the coconut margarita.

Grab a table before they’re gone.

Absolutely blown away by the food and service here despite going in with a negative bias due to a lot of hype from friends. If I had to fault something it'd be the garlic naan (which wasn't bad) but not exceptional. The food was otherwise really good. My friend was disappointed that they couldn't finish all their food because it was really that good. Special mention for the eggplant side dish and samosas.

The cocktails get a 10/10 from me. Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options were very tasty. It's good to see some good creative options on the menu for both. The paper straws were disintegrating a bit quickly though...

The venue itself is very well styled and the small tables are in a nice warm cosy area. Doesn't get too loud, and you're not too close to other tables. Good for conversation.

The staff are friendly and awesome. I'd like to note that they take allergies seriously and even brought up cross-contamination in the deep fryer without being prompted which is incredibly rare. They clearly know what they're doing and I don't think they could do better than they already are.

I had been wanting to come here for a very long time. And it did not disappoint! The ambience and décor was fascinating. The service friendly and prompt. And the food was simply divine! Everything we ordered was beautifully presented and delicious! We shall definitely go back again many times yet!

Monsoon Poon was unknown to us but what a treat. The service staff were very attentive and it was great to see the open kitchen and even the mirror above the chefs station where he prepared the dishes. The food was divine and I would certainly recommend the tandoori lamb cutlets, they melted in my mouth. My daughter said the prawns were amazing although I didn’t see them as she inhaled them in a few minutes. All in all I can not recommend this restaurant more. I don’t think it had a single fault and we will certainly be going back. See you soon, Monsoon Poon!
P.S try the chocolate mousse and don’t get caught licking the bowl!

From the moment we entered the gorgeous Monsoon Poon, the experience was first class. Extremely attentive, yet not invasive wait staff. A credit to the owner. The cocktails are legendary. The food is fragrant, plentiful and beautifully balanced. Bathrooms are spotless with handwash and lotion adding a nice touch. Can't rave about the place any more. Had been to the Wellington one, so was hoping it would equal it. It did! We will be back.. LOTS...

This is the first time we've visited and the food is Delish! and service is professional and very friendly.

There is a selection of Indian, Thai and other Asian dishes with unique flavours.

The food is reasonable priced and the atmosphere and decor is great.

Highly recommended!

Great food, excellent service.

Only disappointment is they don’t let you take the food away if you don’t finish it. Seems a waste to just throw it out because of their strict no take away in doggy bag policy, I heard several tables mention this also- seems a waste if it’s just going to be thrown away anyway.

From the very moment we entered into Monsoon Poon we felt the warm hospitality of the waiting staff. They were very friendly and helpful during the whole dining experiencing. Monsoon Poon should be very proud to have such great front of house staff. Now the food was exceptional. Every part of our meal was absolutely delectable. We thoroughly enjoyed our entire dining experience and look forward to returning again soon. Would highly recommend Monsoon Poon to anyone. Totally worth the 2.5 hour drive from Whangarei.

Monsoon Poon has been a favourite restaurant of mine for a fair few years now, never a disappointing experience! The staff are always friendly, we're never waiting more than 5 minutes before we're approached by the waiters and the food is second to none - so affordable for the quality. The sweet chilli eggplant is out of this world - I've tried so many times to recreate it at home but nothing is ever as perfectly crispy, sweet and soft at the exact same time than when the chefs at Monsoon Poon put it together. The shaking beef is also a favourite, delightful and an adventure for the taste buds - SUPER tasty. Would 100% recommend this establishment and will definitely be back!

Lovely evening at Monsoon Poon. The food was absolutely divine, especially the imperial lettuce cups and duck wonton entrées. Felt welcomed from the minute we walked in the door. I was worried as we were running a bit late and when I called the person I talked to was so nice and also the person who greeted us saying not to worry. Drinks were served quickly and well timed order placed for food. Food came super quickly and was delicious with great portion sizing! The firecracker chicken was definitely a firecracker for the mouth. Finishing off the service was great as we were leaving , the staff being super friendly. Thanks monsoon poon!

Monsoon Poon was a pleasant surprise. I came in not expecting much, and left with tingling tastebuds. The Shaking Beef was amazing...seriously, amazing! Big chunks of succulent beef wok-fried in a delicious sauce with a light dip of subtle lime to freshen it up. Best dish I have had in a while! We stuck to the non-alcoholic drinks, but even here our expectations were exceeded – the Second Dann was so refreshing alongside the spice of the food. All in all, a great evening meal to enjoy after a working day in the city.

Fun decor, convenient location smack in the middle of the city and right next to a carpark building. The food is varied and uniformly excellent with brilliant specials during the happy hour (4 to 7). Very good service and good value - combined with a First Table booking superb value

We were greeted enthusiastically when we arrived. We had a fantastic birthday dinner for my partner - 3 of us in total, my partner, his daughter and myself. We were seated at an appropriately sized table for an intimate dinner. We only ordered main courses with sides and wine - our main course meals were more than adequate, in fact probably a tad large, but who's complaining about that - not me :) The attentiveness of the staff was great and it was so nice not to have to keep asking for the water bottle to be filled, it just happened automatically.
We would definitely go to Monsoon Poon again and even better try for a First Table. I have been here several times over the years and always found it very good.

What a wonderful place. Cannot remember when our portions for entrees were so generous in size. Just too full to finish the mains.
Highlights were the Duck wontons, Soft shell crab curry and the lovely Colonial non alcoholic cocktail.
