Cuisine: A La Carte, Asian, Seafood
Price Point: Mains from $20 - $30
Ranked: #13 of 165 restaurants in Auckland

Cool, colourful and with charismatic staff, Monsoon Poon is the sort of restaurant that makes any evening feel like a party. Decorated with an eclectic jumble of artefacts from across Asia, this is a feel-good destination for dinner and cocktails.

The food draws inspiration from across the Asian continent, with India, China, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines all well represented. Think banquet menus the whole crew will love, spicy options that will set your palate on fire, curries, noodles and plenty of veggie plates.

Grab a table and let the feast begin. Crowd pleasers include prawn wontons, beef rendang and fish tacos, while wok fried tofu and eggplant is served in a sichuan style clay pot, giving it an authentic twist. Feeling brave? Their signature firecracker chicken sliders with dynamite mayo are legendary… for those who dare!

A cold Southeast Asian beer or refreshing wine is the perfect contrast to all that chilli, while the cheeky cocktail menu includes serves such as the Suzy Wong, Singapore Sling and Poon Tang. Personally, we love the coconut margarita.

Grab a table before they’re gone.

My partner and I had the most gorgeous time at Monsoon Poon. The staff are absolutely exceptional, genuinely friendly and so accommodating. The food was delicious and we will definitely be coming back.

This restaurant is amazing, from start to finish. We started with a cocktail at the bar, the cocktail list alone was pretty unique and we will definitely be back too sample more. The barman was very attentive and knowledgeable, always a great sign when you know your product.

When we sat down to eat the menu had great variety, there is definitely something there for everyone including many healthy options. The food arrived quickly, great presentation, incredibly tasty and again superb customer service.

It is the attention to detail that sets this restaurant apart and the all important great customer service.

We will definitely be back!

Always wanted to eat here! Food was amazing and so full of flavor, with fantastic service and recommendations from our waiter. Highly recommend, especially if you enjoy hot spicy food.

Really happy with the small portioned dishes we ordered: spicy chicken wings, fish tacos, peppered squid and the best one was the steamed prawns. Really delicious!! The venue was interesting, a haven from the heat outside (at 5 pm!) and felt roomy. So glad we missed the 7 pm rush :-)
We will be back.

The food was great and the service excellent. The egg plant dish was the best I have ever had! I don’t usually only eat vegetarian but there were so many excellent choices that we skipped the meat dishes and weren’t disappointed.

The service at Monsoon Poon was great. The staff was polite and eager to serve. The food was the highlight of the might the Satay chicken was amazing and so was the mains. My partner had Butter Chicken and I had lamb curry both were delicious with generous portions.

Monsoon Poon ambience was wonderful with Asian touches in decor as well as the presentation of the food.

Would highly recommend to anyone.

Food was outstanding, especially enjoyed very fresh ingredients. The service was great too.

We were warmly welcomed and seated almost instantly despite arriving slightly early. The waitress was attentive and knew the menu well. The waitress recommended some cocktails (Samurai Jack and Lemongrass Mojito) which were amazing. For entree we ordered the Imperial lettuce cups. The dish was not as we expected as the menu didn't mention that they were a make your own style. The Shaking beef was incredible, the meat was very tender and flavourful. We slightly disappointed with the Phoenix and Dragon dish as the sweet and sour chicken and prawn dish was slightly gluggy and the meat was very fatty. The overall atmosphere felt authentic and vibrant and we thoroughly enjoyed our experience.

Really recommend the curry puffs as a starter they were amazing, and the firecracker chicken sliders, we had butter chicken as a main and the fish tacos and the eggplant together as a main - so good! My favourite was the Whittaker’s chocolate mousse, what a dream. Great service too. Wonderful experience!

An amazing first time experience, flavour powerbomb food and delightful professional waitstaff. My partner usually can't handle most ethnic cuisines but he thoroughly enjoyed every meal giving personal ratings of 9s and 10s, that says alot for him. Definitely worth returning and highly recommended.

We had a fabulous meal! There were so many options and the food came out quickly - really important when you have two hangry littlies dining with you. The two curries were fantastic - one was nice and spicy the other, just the right amount of spice for the children. The naan could've fed an army, and we polished that off too. The Vietnamese spring rolls were lovely and fresh and the eggplant in sweet chili sauce - OMG - to die for, even meat eaters would enjoy it. The wok fried beans must've been extra tasty because the 5 year old polished them all off by herself! Overall, we left with such full bellies and a fantastic experience for the kids who had enjoyed Monsoon Poon in Wellington. Oh, by the way, the 3 scoops of Kohu Rd ice cream we ordered even though we were full? The scoops were as big as the kids eyes!!

- dined at Monsoon Poon on

A nice start to our week, not having to cook dinner. Service was attentive, staff happily responded to our questions about the food. I really enjoyed the beef rendang, my husband enjoyed the penang chicken (although a little spicy for me) and we had a side of yummy beans. We loved that the desert options included a ‘single scoop’ of ice cream for when you have only a little room left. We were very impressed with the attentive manager who ushered us to the bar to pay our bill, when he saw we were about to get caught behind a busy table of customers who were about to go pay for their food. That foresight was impressive and welcomed. We will certainly go back.

Absolutely blown away by the food and service here despite going in with a negative bias due to a lot of hype from friends. If I had to fault something it'd be the garlic naan (which wasn't bad) but not exceptional. The food was otherwise really good. My friend was disappointed that they couldn't finish all their food because it was really that good. Special mention for the eggplant side dish and samosas.

The cocktails get a 10/10 from me. Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options were very tasty. It's good to see some good creative options on the menu for both. The paper straws were disintegrating a bit quickly though...

The venue itself is very well styled and the small tables are in a nice warm cosy area. Doesn't get too loud, and you're not too close to other tables. Good for conversation.

The staff are friendly and awesome. I'd like to note that they take allergies seriously and even brought up cross-contamination in the deep fryer without being prompted which is incredibly rare. They clearly know what they're doing and I don't think they could do better than they already are.

I had been wanting to come here for a very long time. And it did not disappoint! The ambience and décor was fascinating. The service friendly and prompt. And the food was simply divine! Everything we ordered was beautifully presented and delicious! We shall definitely go back again many times yet!

Monsoon Poon was unknown to us but what a treat. The service staff were very attentive and it was great to see the open kitchen and even the mirror above the chefs station where he prepared the dishes. The food was divine and I would certainly recommend the tandoori lamb cutlets, they melted in my mouth. My daughter said the prawns were amazing although I didn’t see them as she inhaled them in a few minutes. All in all I can not recommend this restaurant more. I don’t think it had a single fault and we will certainly be going back. See you soon, Monsoon Poon!
P.S try the chocolate mousse and don’t get caught licking the bowl!

From the moment we entered the gorgeous Monsoon Poon, the experience was first class. Extremely attentive, yet not invasive wait staff. A credit to the owner. The cocktails are legendary. The food is fragrant, plentiful and beautifully balanced. Bathrooms are spotless with handwash and lotion adding a nice touch. Can't rave about the place any more. Had been to the Wellington one, so was hoping it would equal it. It did! We will be back.. LOTS...

We have dined at Monsoon Boon a number of times it was always one of my favorite restaurants. Great atmosphere, Generous portions. However last night we found that the kitchen was making the food hotter spice wise than we were accustomed or liked. This came with a prior warning notice from the waiter that meals had no provision for personal preference ie Mild,Medium or Hot, Thats a shame.

I booked here as I heard from a few people that the food was amazing. Myself and my partner were running a bit behind schedule, so I gave them a call about 10minutes before our booking. They had no issue with it. The staff were very warm and accommodating throughout our experience. When we were arrived we were quickly seated and had various people checking in on us and making sure that we had drinks and everything we needed. For an entree, we ordered wontons. They were divine. For a main, I had ordered the Singapore fried noodles with the firecracker chicken. My partner had Karahi Goat curry with jasmine rice. Both were amazing! Far more food than expected and both were delicious. We were seated and finished dining within the hour. I’ve never been more impressed with casual dining service before. I will absolutely be back. Absolutely need a monsoon poon in Christchurch ❤️
