dinner

Set in the heart of Greymouth, Sevenpenny is a café and restaurant with its roots in local lore. Its name tips the hat to the famous 1947 boycott, when West Coast miners and forestry workers pushed back against the price rise from six to seven pence, refusing to patronise local hotels. That proud, community-minded spirit flows through this all-day spot.

That spirit flows into a menu of comforting classics and far-flung flavours.

From the entrées, saganaki of grilled halloumi with honey and oregano offers a sunny salute to the Mediterranean, while loaded duck fat potatoes, a local favourite, come with bacon, melted cheese, chilli jam and sour cream.

Mains include stone oven pizzas, delicious pasta and mouth-watering burgers.

Those with a sweet tooth are well looked after and can linger over chocolate torte with vanilla bean ice cream or warm spiced apple pudding, ribboned with honey caramel and pistachio. Come for a coffee, stay for the atmosphere - it’s Greymouth hospitality, worth every penny!
