Sevenpenny

Set in the heart of Greymouth, Sevenpenny is a café and restaurant with its roots in local lore. Its name tips the hat to the famous 1947 boycott, when West Coast miners and forestry workers pushed back against the price rise from six to seven pence, refusing to patronise local hotels. That proud, community-minded spirit flows through this all-day spot.

That spirit flows into a menu of comforting classics and far-flung flavours. Snacks might begin with baked brie strewn with walnuts, apricots, honey and rosemary, or chicken wings glazed in Korean-style sauce.

From the entrées, saganaki of grilled halloumi with honey and oregano offers a sunny salute to the Mediterranean, while pan-seared fish, a local catch, comes bright with sambal and fried curry leaves. Mains range from a wagyu beef burger with smoked cheddar to pork belly with crispy skin, kumara purée, apple gel and jus.
