Located on Kilbirnie's main street, it's a hard one to miss. Now, this is an honest, community cafe if ever you saw one. Inside it's super lowkey and casual whilst a fabulous sun-soaked terrace awaits you outside. Oh, and enough cakes on display to make the brain boggle! Here, all the focus is on warming the heart and soul with hearty grub.

Forget dainty portions and edible flowers; at Carlton Cafe what you see is what you get. With that in mind, the pancake packer is as jenga tower of fluffy pancakes, caramelised bananas, berry coulis, all drenched in sugary maple syrup. For something truly substantial, look no further than the Traditional Big Breakfast, so called because your plate is overflowing with egg-y, bacon-y, hash-brown-y, sausage-y (doesn't work) goodness! If you fancy the lighter approach, go simple with eggs your way on their selection of breads.

You'll be delighted to hear that breakfast is served all day, as well as some lunch classics. Their beef and fried chicken burgers are never a bad shout, whilst the grilled halloumi salad is a more sensible option if you haven't scheduled a mid-afternoon nap. Actually, scrap that! Their freshly brewed coffee should sort out that conundrum!
