In 1978 Auntie Mabel opened the Monsoon, one of New Zealand’s first Burmese restaurants. A unique woman that brought her food, culture, and inclusive family with her from Myanmar to Te Aro. Today Mabel’s restaurant shares the story and the food of Myanmar with you.
Mabel treats every diner like family. A relaxed and intimate restaurant serves as the dining room, encouraging a lively hum of happy chatter that only gets more boisterous throughout the evening. Soak in the communal feel with loved ones as friends, young and old, reunite around you and reconnect over Mabel's home-cooked style dishes.
Enjoy flavours similar to other Southeast Asian and South Asian cuisines but with their own style and taste. Expect something new with flavours of turmeric, ginger, chilli, umami, and citrus. At lunch sample these flavours with the lunch special tray that has curry, salad, broth, and condiments to give a full experience. Dinner can be intimate or with a large group with a sharing plate style of cuisine.
Mabel's also has a full bar and extensive experience in cocktails inspired by Burmese flavors. Homemade sodas, mocktails, craft beer, and wine. .
