What better way to commemorate the power of the written word than to enjoy a meal at Oamaru’s historic restaurant; The Last Post. Built in 1864, The Last Post was Oamaru’s first Post Office, making it a grand piece of local history. The 150 year old building stands solidly on its central corner site and is the only surviving public building by draughtsman, William Henry Clayton. The Last Post restaurant and bar has been serving Oamaru locals and visitors since 1992.
The Last Post enjoys the exuberant and dynamic atmosphere of its Thames Street location. The modern bar and large decked garden are the perfect spots from which to soak up the glorious summer sun with a glass of your favourite tipple. The warm and cosy dining room combines low ceilings and wooden flooring to hark back to the building’s 19th-century past and create the perfect environment for a family dinner or catch-up with friends.
When it comes to food, The Last Post is focused on four key fundamentals; heritage, taste, quality and service – attributes that have positioned The Last Post as one of Oamaru’s most popular restaurants. You can enjoy a combination of contemporary and classic dishes, with hearty starter options such as garlic bread and the ever-popular seafood chowder. The main course menu features highlights like blue cod fillets, served with salad and chunky fries, and the house steak, a 250g succulent ribeye. The little ones aren’t forgotten either, with a dedicated kid’s menu serving up pint-sized portions of pub favourites. To bring it all to the perfect close, there is a dessert offering that makes choosing just one sweet treat incredibly tricky.
