No.7 Balmac is the kind of restaurant that every neighbourhood ought to be lucky enough to have. Though popular with its local Māori Hill neighbours, word has spread further about this bistro that effortlessly blends everything great about classic and modern dining.

Inside, the restaurant’s decor is happy and unpretentious, unashamedly eclectic and cosier than a night in by the fire. The high windows, lets in lots of natural light, with views over Dunedin setting the scene for the evening.

No.7 Balmac sets the standard for brunch in Dunedin. A first-class café-style menu is all that’s needed at weekends and includes firm favourites such as eggs benedict and brioche French toast. Dunedin’s long-standing love of wild foods is also well-catered for if you’re feeling adventurous. By night, it’s all changed. The daytime menu slides over to create a glossy, sophisticated dinner offering that won’t disappoint.

An incredibly extensive wine and cocktail list proves popular with locals, as does No.7’s unique charm of a wood-fired kitchen and a sheltered courtyard featuring an outdoor fireplace. Wall heaters and awnings also keep the courtyard comfortable regardless of Dunedin weather, making No.7 an appealing choice for both day and evening dining.
