Shiraz Haveli Indian Restaurant Whangarei, is a Northland institution, first opening its doors in 1996.

At its heart is owner-chef Jaswant Singh Minhas, originally from Punjab, who began at Shiraz while studying business management after arriving in New Zealand. By 1998 he had taken the reins and, over the years, helped the brand grow across Dargaville, Kamo and Whangarei, all the while championing an authentic taste of India and the culture that inspires it.

That authenticity begins with the tandoor. Traditional clay ovens fire naans, kiss meats with smoky char - lending vegetarian tandoori dishes their distinctive depth. Curries run from silky comfort to spice-lifted classics - think butter chicken and chicken tikka masala done with care, or a fragrant chicken biryani when the mood calls.

With chefs who have honed their craft in some of India’s top hotels, the kitchen balances tradition with a willingness to refine and evolve. The warm atmosphere makes it as welcoming for a celebratory evening as for a long, leisurely dinner. Pay them a visit in Whangārei, follow your nose to the tandoor and let the spices do the talking!
