Cuisine: European
Price Point: Mains from $25 - $35

Welcome to Belgian Beer Cafe Torenhof, a Christchurch institution that’s as famous for its dazzling beer selection and old world charm as it is for traditional European dishes.

Mussels (Belgium’s national dish) are the signature here, imaginatively served in everything from white wine sauce to spicy Creole-style lasagne and sharing platters.

Not a fish lover? Savour chargrilled meats, juicy burgers, gourmet salads and a delicious selection of small plates. Braised pork belly bruschetta is not to be missed...

Dark wooden panelling and vintage lamps give off a warm, cozy glow that will make you want to linger over a beer (or three!) and there are more than 30 to choose from. The drinks list also includes a selection of premium spirits, cocktails and Kiwi wines.

Of course, it just wouldn’t really be Belgian without a waffle or two. Enjoy yours drizzled in chocolate, scattered with berries or covered in banana caramel sauce.

Having not been to the Belgian Beer Cafe since it was located by the river in town it did not disappoint! I had great memories of deliciously fat mussels steamed to perfection with a decadent sauce and crunchy fries with mayo and this is exactly what we got! We also had the tasting tray of 4 Belgian beers which was fun and I especially liked the cherry one mmmm. We tried the waffles and chocolate fondant for dessert which were both fantastic. Lovely service and decor that suits the experience, We'll go again and take friends.

We had a lovely time. The service was good. The Cafe Torenhof was conducive to conversation it being not a noisy place. The food was good and the beer excellent.

Exactly what we wanted. Prompt and pleasant service, the food was delicious, the chips were crunchy and fresh, ambiance was relaxed, and as you can imagine, the beer selection was spectacular. Small eaters, be mindful of portion sizes - they certainly didn't skimp!

Very delicious and generous portions of a beautiful warm pork salad on a cold Christchurch day. Great service, great food and quite an impressive menu for a "Beer Cafe" I will be back.

Myself and two others went for lunch on a Sunday arvo and we were all really impressed. I ordered the half pot of mussels and they were hands down the best mussels I have ever had. My partner and friend were also really impressed with their dishes. We each left saying we would have been happy to pay full price for the dishes we had. Also, the lady who was serving us was very attentive and really lovely. We will definitely be back!

Dining at Torenhof was a great experience. The service was friendly and prompt, the food was delicious and the surroundings were perfect for a group of people who wanted to be able to have a good conversation. Several of our group come from Dutch families so they were delighted to see the rookworst sausage on the menu! Everyone enjoyed their meals. Thanks to our lovely wait staff who recommended the beer - also delicious. I would recommend Torenhof for their food, the ambiance and wonderful staff.

Had a nice time was exactly what we expected, squid was really yummy, but weird sauce with the chicken breast didn't quite work but will return.

The chicken burger was fabulous, as were the German sausages. Dumplings also very good indeed. This restaurant should have been full on a Sunday - the food was excellent and so were the staff.

Great food, great service, will be back

Lamb shanks had no extra flavour added to the cooking process, add wine and herbs and other flavours to make it amazing, so I wont be back, i expect flair from chefs not basic and I little more cooking time to make the meat even softer please, cauliflower with no cheese sauce is also not my thing. If basic is your thing this restaurant is fine.

Continued excellence in quality of food and service. Have dined here several times and will be back again.

The food was delicious and well presented but I wonder if we got value for our money even though we were paying only First Table rates. My skinny lamb shank accompanied by a tiny amount of roasted vegetables and some mashed potato would have been very expensive indeed at full price - $36.00.
I am beginning to suspect that some eateries are serving up smaller meals for First Table diners.

My favourite restaurant now! Everything is cooked perfectly, ingredients were fresh. Clean and welcoming environment, excellent taste and service. Definitely worth to try. The Linguini was creamy and flavorful, my husband ordered rib eye steak, cooked to perfection, he loves the dark ale beer. Mussel pot was great too. Decent portion as well. For kid's meal, very good value comes with a dessert, an ice cream treat for my boy.

Easy to find restaurant at The Colombo and parking as plentiful in the front.

We were met by a very friendly and attentive server who was delightful for the rest of the evening making sure that everything was going fine. The best service we've had in a while.

The food was delicious, starting with half a mussel hot pot each. The mussels were big and meaty and full of flavour. To follow, we had the vegetarian dish and also a beef brisket. Both were great with plenty of flavour and came out piping hot. For dessert, we had the waffles which were quite average. Tasted stale and the toppings lacking. It didn't detract too much from the rest of the meal.

Be sure to try out their beer selection too as there's plenty on tap and the Brune Leffe was great for a dark beer.

Fabulous choice of venue to treat my bestie for her birthday lunch. We were warmly greeted on our arrival and given our choice of table. Was a fabulous day so sat outside in the sun. The menu was extensive and well priced for the portion sizes we received. We decided on a selection or entrees to share and were not disappointed with what was dished to us. Thanks Belgian Beer Cafe - we’ll be back!

Was my Mum's 84th birthday and she had a lovely lunch. The food was good, service excellent even when Mum couldn't make up her mind. Have now been to Belgian Beer Café a couple of times and the food and service have been excellent each time. Even made Mum decide she might like to go out to lunch more often. That could have just been a hint:-)

We had a lovely night! Service was incredible. The pate was delicious and corned beef burger amazing and the chicken tenders and dipping sauce full of flavour. The Mayo was underwhelming.

- dined at Belgian Beer Cafe Torenhof on

Great mulled wine. Food was okay, entree of calamari was tasty, main was okay, could of been what we ordered, one chicken breast and one beef brisket.
I found it difficult to find something not accompanied by potatoes. I possibly could of read the menu incorrectly, but I didn't think the chicken breast came with potatoes. The tempura broccoli was delicious, could of just had that for a main. There was definitely plenty of food, and no room for dessert. Restaurant felt cold on walking in. Service was always with a smile and efficient. Mulled wine was warming and tasty.

This is the place for sauce-lovers! Without smothering the dishes there is plenty of flavoursome sauce complimenting each dish and you can taste that they are made fresh and from scratch. The fish and brisket were super delicious. I'm in love with the warm goats cheese salad, too! The unique ingredients (water chestnuts & pecan) and great taste made it to my top dish at this place. Will def be back, super lecker - vielen Dank!!
