Celebration of food @ The Hook.

Local seafood when you’ve just been on a coastal walk, what could be better? The Hook in Petone offers the freshest on the market.

A short stroll from the esplanade, The Hook is a clean, open-plan dining space with low-lit Edison bulbs and copious greenery. A warm respite from the cooler air of the Petone coast.

If the name hasn’t given it away already, fish (and seafood) is the dish of the day, every day. Japanese style ceviche and Vietnamese Nelson mussels make for exotic sharing plates, with more substantial mains such as surf n turf offering a heartier meal.

The Hook is also a craft beer hub, with both Panhead and Emerson’s varieties on tap, including the latter’s London Porter to warm your cockles on a cooler day. The wine list is also strong and if that’s not strong enough, there’s plenty of cocktails to mull over.

When the food's this good, you’re sure to be hooked (sorry, we couldn't resist!) Book a table today.

First time at The Hook with my friends. Felt very welcomed by the staff member. Everyone enjoyed there dish nothing beats a classic burger with fries, fish pie was also very nice alongside a pasta a dish (sorry can’t remember what it was called).

Gotta try the mussels as well so good.
Finished with a banoffee and tiramisu dessert. Portion of desserts could be bigger lol just being honest but other then that flavour is so good.

We will defs be back.

Loved the food! The beef on the beef and prawns skewers were just tender, the squid karage beautifully cooked - crispy batter outside and soft inside, a welcome texture to the usual overcooked, chewy squid one finds at the fish and chip shop.

My dad and I shared the Pork trio and it was delish! Especially with the Feijoa jam. My dad enjoyed the way the pork was seared on the outside and the tenderness of the pork belly.

We also enjoyed our desserts. I had the deconstructed banoffee pie and my dad, the tiramisu. The only critique would be the jars they were served in, they made it a bit hard to get all the 'goodness' inside.

I also have to mention how quickly the dishes got out to us. Very prompt

Overall, my dad and I were very happy with the experience

Had a great experience at The Hook last Tuesday. Enjoyed seafood chowder, friends told to order calamari starters expect it’s to come out as pictured on reviews pics but (wish they keep their consistency), followed by superbly cooked lamb shank, that is mine plate, of course. Staff were awesome, well informed gave lovely service, so I guess we'll have to go back, I say.

Table was reserved for us once we arrived. The manager greeted us by my name and directly us to our table. We were able to add an additional personal to our table with no stress. Great kids options. Great music in the background. Great atmosphere. Reasonable pricing. Delicious food.

Me and my husband book reservations at The Hook and the meal, well mainly the entrees were AMAZING!! but the mains were ok not great but ok. Hubby had the Surf n Turf to him it was ok but not so great. I had the Hook Pork Trio, which was again ok but not great as a couple.of the pork were dry as anything. I had to scoop some sauce on it to be able to eat it, plus I would have liked it to be hot not Luke warm. It won't stop us from.going back far from it, we just won't order those mains again. But the service was excellent and our hostess was really friendly with a beautiful smile and polite.

We were overcharged. No napkins on our table and had to grab the ones from another table. Couldn’t hear the waiter and we were over serviced as it wasn’t busy. Had to ask for more water. The food was average and overpriced. The same sauce was used for the fish as well as the crab ravioli. The sauce was too thick, creamy heavy, and was very sickly. Stone grill was small and not filling. I could cook it to my liking however I could had done this at home. The mussels were the only thing that was nice. However I wouldn’t pay full price here and getting overcharged pissed me off.

We are a family of 2 adults and 2 kids to have a dinner at HOOK. The service is really excellent. They gave two glasses of juice to my kids at the beginning of the dinner without charge. When we nearly finished the dinner, they gave me a free of charge coffee.
For the food, all the dishes are delicious and the size is good enough. I will definitely go again.

We had the first night of the new menu and it was delicious! there was 7 of us dinning. 4 on a first table and then we added on 3 more at normal price. the staff were very accommodating for this. We all tried something different and had very good meals, and entrees. Everything had a nice bit of spice in the dishes that were meant to. all aspects of the dishes complimented themselves nicely. Would definitely recommend this restaurant for others. it has a great atmosphere and is suitable for all occasions.

Problem with First Table voucher apparently didn't reserve on the Restaurants end. Almost had to pay full price. Luckly I had an email to show proff of booking. Besides that. Manager was lovely and explained the situation politely. Meal was good. Atmosphere was beautiful.

Wait staff was warm and courteous.
I had pork - quite tasty and big serving for me. My friend had lamb shank. Delicious too. Tiramisu was done well. The waffle with ice creams on top was too dry and hard so did not enjoy that. Entree mussels was a little disappointing. Some did not taste fresh. But the sauce over them was tangy and yummy.
Restaurant has been refurbished to a lovely standard. Nice ambience.
Would go back again to try other courses. Lots of choices.

The meals were delicious, and the four of us absolutely enjoyed everything:) The only hiccup was the lack of transparency of the spirit prices, I think there should be prices for spirits on the drinks menu.
Apart from that, excellent dinning and I highly recommend "The Hook" as a go to place for fabulous food, lovely ambience and excellent service:)

Friendly attentive staff even when it started to get busy. Food came out quickly. I had the Pork 3 Ways which came out beautifully presented, the pork belly was delicious and cooked to perfection, the tenderloin was also good but could have done with just a little more seasoning. My husband had the stonegrill steak which was a decent size steak and he had fun cooking his own steak, he also loved the Jus served with it which was quite tasty. Overall a really good dining experience.
