Proud to offer the full English experience without giving any of their Kiwi soul, The Crooked Elm is a pub with the best of both worlds.
You wouldn't be the first to think that The Crooked Elm is something out of a spooky fairy-tale but it's very much alive and kicking in Lower Hutt. Instead of an enchanted tree in the middle of the woods, The Crooked Elm is a very British pub in look and feel, providing easy-going communal spaces for anyone who wants a yarn with mates.
The menu is featured around good English comfort food, and nowhere is it clearer than their giant gourmet pies that are served with a mustard mash and mushy peas. Pies are filled with the likes of beef brisket submerged in a craft beer and tomato sauce, chicken braised in velouté sauce and enriched with cream, sherry, and lemon juice, or seasonal vegetables, English mustard, and horseradish, bound in a rich 3 cheese sauce and creamed spinach Who knew vegetables could be so naughty? And it goes without saying the crust is thin, flaky, and moreish.
Mains offer options like a braai rubbed rib eye, BBQ pork spare ribs, and their premium smoked pork belly, all with the option to be made keto on request. It seems like all fairy tales do have a happy ending!
