Cuisine: A La Carte, British, Gastro Pub Food
Price Point: Mains from $15 - $35

Never was there a more apt name for a bright, modern gastro-pub in New Zealand's funky capital ā€“ Duke of Wellington.

Located in perhaps the most brutal wind tunnel known to man, The Duke of Wellington is a stone's throw away from the train station. Take a break from those furious winds and shelter in this ultra-modern take on a British classic.

Seeing as the Duke himself loved a hearty plate of grub (probably), this establishment serves the best pub-grub in the CBD. Get stuck into their confit pork belly, slow-braised beef cheek, fish and chips and the ultimate pub champion, bangers and mash. Think of it as safeguarding against getting blown away.

And with a constantly rotating menu of local beers, you'll have to pop in and see what they have at the time. It's true what they say, the best things in life are unexpected...so just imagine an unexpected beer!

Reviews

Good honest and reasonably priced food prepared with flair. With its proximity to the Railway Station, this is a great spot for an after work drink & meal, or pre-show meal on the way from/to the city.

We loved the whole experience. Fantastic renovation to light, bright and airy.

Friendly staff who catered for my Vegan daughters, the food was absolutely fantastic I loved the fish and leek pie and the curried cauliflower.

Highly recommended to everyone.

Great tasting food and coffee, Eggs Benedict with salmon and bacon was cooked perfectly.....and tasty mushrooms.

The guy serving us was hard case, good sense of humor and very friendly.

Definitely recommend it for breakfast, we will be back for dinner at some point. Big thumbs up!

Thank you for a lovely evening and meal. A special thank you for accommodating us, as some of us were stuck in the horrible traffic that day. We really appreciated the service.

We used First Table to try this gastropub having hears mixed reviews from friends.Went on Saturday and ordered the pork sandwich and the roast chicken...the pork sandwich had smoked cheese, bacon and pork with various sauces..the pork was not good. The chicken was okay but there was no mashed potato (parsnip it turned out) and it was covered by beetroot wedges. The wait guy was pleasant enough... we finished with a good cheeseboard.

It was not to my taste steak was a little tough and needed a sauce. My partners meal was a little better but the mushy peas were cold. Good choice of beers.

Really loved the new look for the place and if you love a loud buzzy atmosphere then you'll enjoy that here. Unfortunately, I and the other person I went with prefer quieter places, so it wasn't our cup of tea.

The food was nice, though be wary of the fish and cauliflower pie if you have a sensitive stomach, and the portion for the baby root vegetable salad was small considering it was $20 at list price ā€” I'd have called it a light meal rather than a main.

The service was fine, however the staff member who took our orders was very offhand about our dietary restrictions, which was a bit of a downer and didn't inspire confidence that I wouldn't wind up with a migraine from the food. We also ordered a pineapple juice at the bar and received an orange juice, but that was likely because of the noise and not something the staff could help.

Won't be returning myself, but I can definitely see other people enjoying themselves here.
