What a fabulous find! Alley Cantina is tucked away down a alley beside Farmers on the main Street. Brightly coloured flags and music welcome you as you head to the entrance and inside is a brightly coloured setting with subtle lighting and a festive atmosphere. We were seated by the open fire and given a run through of the menu. The house made tortilla chips were spicy and morish and the alley platter a real standout! The beauty of this dish is you get to try a little of everything along with a trio of dipping sauces. The food is simple authentic and incredibly good, the quesadilla, chicken tacos and jalpeno poppers deserve an honerable mention and the service from our hostess was outstanding. The churros with salted caramel sauce were the perfect finish to our meal and I'm already planning another visit. Highly recommend that you dine here, such an enjoyable evening! Thanks for a great meal out.

Had an absolutely fabulous time!

The atmosphere of the restaurant is like stepping into Mexico - you wander down an alley off the street, following the sound of the music and colourful banners. Stepping inside, there is almost an assault of the eyes - bright colours, candles and flamboyant music!

You cannot go wrong with their homemade margaritas - I particularly loved the Strawberry one! (and if you get the jam jar size you can order every flavor!) The white wine sangria was also delicious if you're feeling a bit more sophisticated!

We ordered the Alley Platter for two and wow! The food was delicious, full of flavor and left us feeling stuffed and happy - the platter is a brilliant choice if you can't decide what to eat - it comes with a little bit of everything and we couldn't finish it!

Ten, despite already feeling full, we couldn't leave without a cheeky churro (or 6) and opted for them with caramel sauce. They need to rename those churros to 'Death by deliciousness' and my companions nearly had to roll me out of the place! It was the perfect end to a brilliant meal.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Alley Cantina for a delicious meal and a brilliant experience - one of my favourite restaurants!

A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!! We entered the restaurant, greeted by friendly staff. Sat down at the cutest wee table lit with a candle. Food was so fast and sooooo delicious. Highly recommend the cheesy jalapeño bites (and everything else on the menu for that matter). Best service, best food. We will be back!!

We had a lovely time and the food was so delicious, particularly the cheesy jalapeno bites. Generous servings, very efficient staff and would definitely recommend this place to others or perhaps come back here for another meal.

Great experience. Friendly and welcoming staff. Generous serving and tasty authentic mexican food. This is one of my favourite places to eat.

A nice atmosphere with good service. The food was huge servings so didn’t quite finish it and was okay - I had the gf style nachos. I’d recommend having the tortilla chips as a starter - they are pretty good.
Overall a nice experience but food could be improved

As the name suggests, restaurant is tucked down an alley and you hear it (the music) before you see it...Very good decour with a ‘day of the dead’ theme. We used to live in Los Angeles and thought the food was the most authentic of Mexican establishments in Dunedin. Started off with traditional chips & salsa which were actually flour tortilla chips (home-made) instead of corn and we would probably have preferred corn, the salsa was also nice, but a bit too much cumin in it we thought. My wife had the fajitas and the rice & beans were made from scratch which was good & portion size was generous - no sizzling hot plate though and alot of celery in the salad which was different - would have preferred more traditional red/green peppers & onions. I had the shredded beef burrito which again was a large size and tasty - it was a bit spicy however and I was not asked what spice-level when ordering which wold have been nice. Overall a good dining experience and we would definitely recommend Alley Cantina for a nice authentic Mexican meal...

We ordered the Alley Platter and was very happy with the quality and quantity. It is good for two people and is a sampler of what is in the menu. There are a lot of vegetarian options as well. The place became busier as the night progressed. This is the place to get full! The ambience was good too!

Once again it was a wonderful dining experience at Alley Cantina. Our absolute favourite dish was the Nachos Cantina Style, definitely recommend!

When we first arrived we thought it a bit dark but our eyes adjusted after a time. The atmosphere was pleasant and the food was delicious. Our waitress was new and on a trial but did well and admitted when she was unsure which we appreciated. All up it was an enjoyable evening.

We love coming here! The atmosphere and the food are always guaranteed to impress! From the corn chips to the churros we are assured of the high quality food we will be returning again! Best Mexican food in town!

- dined at Alley Cantina on

The food was delicious, very tasty and their usual high standard. However, we were disappointed to find the drinks were automatically served with plastic straws and as environmentally friendly people in a country that is environmentally-oriented, we would recommend that straws were available upon request rather than being provided by default.

Although the meals were well enjoyed (with huge portion sizes) and worthy of praise, we were not meal checked and felt like we were ignored once we received our meals and drinks. Although not the worst service, we did not feel like valued customers throughout our visit.

Lastly, after a pleasant evening in a vibrant atmosphere, we realised once we got home that the 50% discount was not deducted for one of our meals. It was an honest mistake and we were refunded later on without hesitation, however we would recommend that customers and staff double check bills and receipts.

Thank you for the lovely evening, we will definitely be back soon!

Very Nice. Genuinely a very good meal

Alley Cantina is great. Get the platter for two, we always get that and take the leftovers home.

The only reason I don't give Alley Cantina 5 stars is that the restaurant can be slightly on the dark side. But there are always lots of candles

Delicious Mexican food. Great service, good value for money. Not too spicy for the kids. Best churros I've eaten. Only disappointment was that the margaritas weren't made with crushed ice.

Lovely meal at Alley Cantina. Meals came out quite quickly after ordering. They were all a good size and very tasty.
A little disappointing that no one checked we were going ok, refilled our water or asked if we needed any more drinks.
We asked for our plates to be cleared and for the dessert menu.
Good value for money and a relaxed atmosphere.

I celebrated my 40th birthday with my family at Alley Cantina. The atmosphere was really good, we were seated in a funky little room right by a warm fire and were supplied with colourful sombreros to help us get into a celebratory mood! My partner and I spent time in Baja a couple of years ago, it was great to be immersed in the tastes and sounds of Mexico again. Thank you!

Just wow! Alley Cantina never fails to please. Walking down the alley and being welcomed by that distinctive beautiful smell makes my mouth water. The only disappointment that I have is that I come out so incredibly full because I can’t resist the perfectly cooked nachos! I would recommend this restaurant for small groups to dine by the fire and large groups can dine to have a nice party. Overall, this place creates a great atmosphere to enjoy beautiful meal.

Fun ambience. Friendly waitstaff. Homemade hips and salsa were delicious. Enchiladas super tasty. Fajita meat prepared a little differently than I am used to. I prefer sliced whole pieces. This was chopped and mixed with something. Almost more lettuce wrap style.
