Our waiter for the evening was James. We were seated quickly and then James ran through the menu and got our drink orders. We ended up ordering steak tartare for entree, then two 47 day aged ribeye with spring potatoes and polenta sides, then finished off with a cheese board and chocolate marquise for dessert. Everything looked and tasted amazing and I think I've gained some weight! James showed his clear knowledge of the restaurant menu, paired our steaks with some lovely wine, and overall gave us A+ service. I can't wait to go back and try more of their food :)

I heard this place was good. It was better than good, Absolutely Awesome. After trying to get a table for 5 weeks ( constantly sold out) I set my alarm clock for midnight and .........Jackpot, got a table. All I can say is that I cannot fault anything. Also thanks for the Chefs showing my 7 year old daughter around the kitchen and inside the meat chiller. FANTASTIC!!

One of the best dining experiences we’ve ever had. The exquisite meat was the absolute hero, complemented by delicious sides - must try those carrots and the Brussel sprouts yum! Going first table allowed us all to indulge in an entree and dessert too, everything was top class.
We also very much appreciated never feeling rushed - we’ll definitely be returning!

When we arrived we were greeted by a very friendly waitress who immediately lead us to our table.
Another waitress came to our table, introduced herself & asked if she could take our coats & what kind of water we would like at our table for which we requested tap water. She then advised us of the specials for the night & took our drink orders.
We had a complimentary plate of pita bread & humus bought over within minutes. A couple minutes later she asked if we had been to Bessies before to which we replied we certainly had,& then asked if we were ready to order.
She duly took our orders then repeated to ensure nothing had been missed. Our entrees came out first which 3 of our party had the Salmon while I had my favorite chicken liver parfait. They were all consumed with delight & my parfait was just as I remember from last time; outstanding. Our mains came out 20 mins later & again the food was excellent.
My tomahawk was just as I remembered from last time, outstanding ( this would have been my 5th tomahawk over the years from Bessies), and the rest of the party enjoyed their meals as mush as I did.
The waitress was extremely attentative looking over to make sure our water glass was full, seeing if we required anything & asked how our meals were going. This was again a very pleasing & amazing dining experience. We would not hesitate to recommend Bessies to our family & friends which we have done so since our first dining experience there which was about a month after Bessies first opened it doors. We look forward to our next amazing mouthwatering experience at our favourite restaurant.
Warmest regards

It is not often I get excited about going to a restaurant. After finally getting a First Table booking here I was like a kid waiting for Christmas.
The whole experience was worth the wait and more. Fantastic service, outstanding food and very cool decor to boot.
What we saved in food costs my partner in crime (wife) and I made up in the drinks department. Kids came in useful and drove us home full and very very happy. Perfect night.

Amazing service and delicious food. Definitely coming back again! We ordered short rib, which was beautifully cooked. Roast potatoes and croquettes for the side and that was well seasoned. My husband ordered another beef steak and he absolutely loved it! After our massive meals, we finished it off with desserts. Waffle with Apple with some sorbet, chocolate mouse which was just beautiful! Thanks Bessie also for those yummy complimentary bread to start off with.

Another sublime experience at my favourite restaurant. Staff are beyond attentive. They're always welcoming and professional. I had they eye fillet medium with buttermilk cos salad and baby spring potatoes and lemon sorbet. All were superb. One guest wanted a strawberry sundae which wasn't on the menu but the chefs whipped up one that looked like a work of art.it really was a fantastic experience and I can't recommend this restaurant highly enough.

No wonder this is rated the best restaurant in Christchurch! Such an amazing experience from start to finish.

The staff were very polite and helpful with explaining the menu and each of the dishes. They would ensure we were well looked after throughout the evening.

The pork belly was exceptional, as was the aged steak. Both dishes were bursting with flavour and perfect portions. The sides of exquisitely finished vegetables made the meal a true flavour explosion.

The dim and intimate lighting, creates real ambience. The great thing also, is that it is a perfect size and the tables are laid out beautifully, so that you can hear each other speak.

There is an extensive beverage menu - wine which perfectly matches the meat dishes. The mocktail menu was on point too. A truly magnificent and memorable experience.

You should all be very proud of this Restaurant I would rate it as one of the Top Restaurants in Christchurch. We had the Complimentary Oysters - delicious!!!! We had a lovely meal last night at Bessie's. The food was amazing, the Aged Rib-Eye Steak and the Short Rib were delightfully tender....... and our waitress, Ruby, was fabulous. She was very informative about the menu and suggested we try certain items and she was very attentive, making sure we were happy with our meal, and keeping an eye out if we needed more drinks. We will definitely be back to Bessie's again soon.

Bessie is our favourite restaurant in Christchurch. We always order the eye fillet with potato sides and have two lots of the sauces. We then mop it up with their fresh baked sour dough bread. The service is attentive with our waiter, Oscar taking the time to chat with us as he was informed we were regulars. The food is sublime, the ambiance is stellar and we can’t wait to return!

- dined at Bessie on

The Bessie dining experience started with delicious complimentary flatbread, followed by duck fat potato croquettes, steaks for the teenagers and a novel 800g shared Tomahawk steak which was beautifully cooked, for the adults. A unique dining experience with the aged steak housed on display within the dining area.

Bessie's is one of my favourite restaurants to dine at and never disappoints. The entree of the parfait was superb and both the steaks we enjoyed were cooked to perfection. Unfortunately no room for dessert on this occasion but there'll be another time....:) Ruby was a lovely, attentive waitress.

Had a fantastic visit to Bessie. Ambiance was amazing, food tasted superb and staff were very attentive. Excellent dealing with my Coeliac husband too. Will definitely be back on our next visit to Christchurch.

Pretty impressed. Beautifully presented meals. Tasty entrees. Could do with more colourful cooked sides to go with the mains apart from the salad, the other 4 were all white - potatoes, polenta, wheat. Meat was tasty. The wide range of dessert options were delicious

Although a little hard to find, once we got to Bessie we were warmly welcomed by staff. The service and food were exceptional. We got three mains and 2 sides to share between 3 and it easily was enough. Loved the cosy interior of Bessie, would definitely recommend to others and return

I had heard that Bessie was great, but had also read mixed reviews online so I didn't know what to expect. I was absolutely blown away! I went with my Mum and Dad, so basically sampled half of the menu. The food was to die for! I could literally write pages about this, but I'll just tell you about my faves. The pork jowl croquettes were absolutely, melt in your mouth delicious. My eye fillet steak was cooked to perfection. The polenta was unexpectedly my favourite side, perfectly balanced with crispy kale and lightly cooked mushroom. I finished with the Malibu panna cotta, which was a subtle and delicate sweet treat at the end of a perfect meal. Mum ordered the open portobello ravioli - the woman doesn't even like mushrooms and she was raving about it, that's how good the food is at Bessie! Above and beyond that, we had the most wonderful, friendly and attentive wait staff (Reagan especially), our food was brought to us efficiently, and the venue itself exuded a romantic ambience that made the meal feel special. Could not recommend more highly.

Round of applause for the team at Bessie. Once again an outstanding experience. It’s such a nice touch to have piping hot fresh bread arrive complimentary while your tummy is rumbling looking at the menu and all the delicious options. My husband and I can’t go past the steak tartare and pork jowl croquettes for entree, yum. We really should try something else next time but we can’t help ourselves. This time I had the beef short rib and it was mouth watering and delicious. My husband had his steak cooked to chefs recommendations and he was so happy. We also had desert this time which was a nice way to finish a great meal, the chocolate marquise was light and delicious and not too sweet. Thanks team, highly recommend.

I think I may have a new favourite restaurant. Everything I had was delicious. And I must admit everything my friend had was delicious too; I had to try! My steak was really tasty but next time I will be getting the lamb as it was even better! *Goes off on a daydream about that lamb*

Manuka Smoked egg: deliciously runny yolk and a dish unlike anything I've had. So good.
Grass fed rib eye: tasty good quality steak
Duck fat potato croquettes: delicious and best dipped in the steak sauce.
Chocolate marquise: nice and rich. I am a chocolate fiend and this satisfied me! Top notch.

My partner had their specialty dry aged ribeye and he can say hands down it was the best steak he has ever had. I had the short rib and it was so tender it melted in your mouth. I hope the lamb neck can back to the menu. Rib eye on bone (aged)still the perfect mid rare !(is very hard to keep that level every time) But the wagyu is shit! Should feel melt in the mouth! Then was feel just like a fat steak . Hope next time can be better. I love the strawberry crush!Every time must order! I understand is not the season but is bad taste just like the sugar water before you do the blood test.

Must order food have the cloud bay clams, chicken liver, steak tata, rib eye on bone , homahawk !

If you like seafood , the cloud bay clams must order 2 or more ! I already miss them when them in my mouth. Even the full price just under $20! Cheap but delicious !

No matter what I said . Bessie still the best steakhouse in Christchurch. Still my fav restaurant.

The dry aged Ribeye in bone is cooked to perfection! Wagyu beef steak medium is bit too chewy though. We didnt like the free range chicken. The portion of side is good for sharing. Bessie is the best restaurant in the city. My partner and I are always treated so well. The staff are attentive, the steaks are always cooked as you asked for them (we had rare through well done and all were spot on). The sides! The potatoes, glazed carrots were amazing and their salad with buttermilk dressing is sublime. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. The only thing we would tweak would be the dessert menu as nothing appeals. Perhaps a cheesecake or apple pie. Something simple. Anyway, superb food, wish I was going again this evening!
