On Auckland’s North Shore, Zapan Japanese Bakery Cafe brings the gentle art of Japanese bread to local tables.
The name nods to pan, the Japanese word for bread, and zapan, the sound of ocean waves - a fitting echo for its seaside connection to Devonport. Since arriving from Japan in 2012 and settling in Takapuna, the team has been quietly building a delicious bridge between two cultures.
Inside, historic brick walls and soft lighting set a warm, unhurried tone - outside, a breezy perch invites lingering over coffee and conversation. The space balances traditional charm with modern comfort, offering a cosy nook for early birds and a calm hideaway for afternoon seekers.
On the plate, familiar café comforts meet Japanese flavours. Think pillowy toast crowned with yakiniku barbecue beef and a poached egg, or a tangle of kimchi and pork with gentle heat.
Sandwiches run from a fresh tamago number brightened with a hint of lemon jam to a crisp pork katsu layered with fruity tonkatsu sauce. Meanwhile, sweets lean indulgent with matcha French toast paired with red bean, rich ice cream and clouds of cream, or spiced apple on shokupan.
Drop by for bread that whispers rather than shouts, stay for the serenity, and catch the zapan wave one bite at a time!
