Price Point: Mains from $20 - $40

For a quality pub grub in Mt Eden, The Dominion is your newly upgraded territory to command.

This recently refurbished stalwart is both airy and modern, yet cosy. The original brickwork has been exposed, creating a homely atmosphere, which is only added to by the glorious fire.

The food is as comforting as the atmosphere, although it also comes with a little twist. The chicken schnitzel with mustard mash is a firm favourite, while NZ pork belly served with mozzarella croquettes and burnt apple puree is a delight to the senses.

As expected from any self-respecting Kiwi bar and eatery, there’s an extensive wine list, all offerings from which come from either the homeland or Australia. There’s also a strong local and international beer and cider selection.

For your next food-based conquest, be sure to take over The Dominion.

Probably best to just go for a drink here...food underwhelming & service what you would expect in a bar....the starter ribs were about the only thing we enjoyed, they were tender and tasty..the mains were both disappointing...fish had funny thin batter that looked pretty unappealing & was extremely salty as was the steak to the point my friend didnt eat hers....and we like a lot of salt! Wine was good but this wont bring us back...

Where do I start? This was a celebration dinner for my daughter getting into University, but it was no celebration. We found our way to the table area and asked at the bar where to sit, someone pointed to a table being cleaned and we sat there once the cleaning was finished. The badly photocopied menus were the first warning sign.
We had menus arrive after 10 minutes and ordered fairly quickly... While we waited 45 minutes for the entree we watched with bemusement the Faulty Towers like drama unfolding around us. We were near the kitchen and watched very stressed looking staff taking meals out and back again many times as they were the wrong orders. We saw a couple of people leave their food uneaten and walk out. others chasing up long overdue orders and returning wrong orders.
A waiter walked around looking for the owners of an orders, which was what we had ordered, so attempted to claim the entrees, Prawn Twisters and Salt and Pepper Squid. We were told to leave them while he checked with the chef, and put them on our table, 5 minutes later he was back to reclaim them lucky we didn't touch them! Someone else asked for our table number, we didn't have one, but one was plonked on our table 10 minutes later. Still meals going in and out, Basil and Manuel looking very stressed, and not in control!
My sons main, a plain tomato paste and cheese pizza arrived well before any entree as it was explained " that it was a special order so the chef did not want to forget it so made it first". So he ate while we watched.
Finally entrees arrived after 45 minutes, the prawn twisters looked nothing like the tasty false start plate that was reclaimed, it was minus aioli and hastily thrown on a massive pile of lettuce. The squid was hastily cooked an clumped together, neither looked like the presentable first set we missed out on. The chips were good, we took pity on a family with two small girls who had been waiting nearly an hors and shared some pizza and hips...gratefully received.
Roll on another 30 minutes or so and the mains appeared, or a version of them.... the Tandoori Pizza was spicy but Ok, the Pork Belly tough and chewy and no Burnt Apple Sauce! My daughter persevered through it as she was hungry. In place of the Chicken Schnitzel with Mustard Mash, Slaw amd Burnt Apple Sauce I was presented with something I couldn't identify, accompanied by a huge pile of fries and grated carrot.
Not happy, I thought I had been given the wrong meal and returned it but back it came with the assurance that it was, but that the menu had changed and the waiter hadn't told me. No, i didn't want the unidentified substitute and cancelled my order.
Finally at payment we received an apology and explanation that the menu had changed but not been altered in the printing, something like that, I couldn't really follow. We then trooped over to Countdown to get something yummy for dessert.
Please keep customers informed, I could see you had a lot of unhappy customers that night but didn't really address the issues or offer explanations or apologies. People do understand if you talk to them. It was fascinating watching the comedic entrance and return of so many meals, but a very disappointing experience, one which I will not be repeating.
