Cuisine: Nepalese, Street Food, Vegan
Price Point: Mains from $15 - $25

Tama Eatery is bringing Nepali and Newari food to Auckland.

Long tables with benches form the seating plan at this restaurant which afford it a distinctly communal feel. At the end of the dining room is a stage, open for acoustic gigs and general merriment; you’ll think you’ve walked into a Nepalese market!

Specialising in tapas style small plates, they’re perfect for mixing and matching. Try the Aaloo Tama, a thick stew with black eyed beans, the lamb chowella marinated in burnt tomatoes or the Nepalese equivalent to a taco. If you’re having trouble deciding between you, go for the baji set; a colourful sharing platter bursting with bold flavours.

Have an ice-cold beer to hand with their range of household names like Heineken and Asahi as well as NZ beers on tap. Or why not indulge in their concise cocktail menu which heralds simple, delicious combinations with a no frill attitude.

Food here is amazing! So many flavours and textures and great options. We shared the edamame, the Big Big (selection of curry, veg, beans, roti etc), had the Nepalese “tacos” and steamed dumplings and it was all delicious! We had all the vegan options to suit someone in the group and they were great. Good mix of spicy, smoky, deep cumin flavours as well as fresh! Awesome place to try traditional Nepalese food

Went here to try something new. The dumplings were very nice, we had both fried and steamed. Ordered Lamb Chowella and Pork Sekuwa as well. The Chowella was enjoyable because it was different (served on flakes and soybeans) the Sekuwa was bland (basically just overcooked/charcoaled pigs belly). The ambience was somewhat confused, I liked the Nepalese themed environment but didn’t really like the music (I think it is was Akon??) which was playing quite loud. Overall not a bad experience, I would come back for dumplings and beer during happy hour.

I'd heard people say great things about Tama but had never been, so finally i went there with a few mates before going to the theatre. And it was fabulous. Big jugs of beer, excellent dumplings, everything was flavoursome, fresh and perfect for sharing. We'll most definitely be back. Thank you!

Although a little hard to find (I walked right past it twice), this place is a real gem. Great food, cosy, didn't feel rushed at all. One of the mains even came with a shot of tequila! Would go back.

First time to Tama and was particularly excited about trying Nepalese food...especially the mo-mo. Lovely friendly staff, that were casual but responsive and quick. Its a nice touch as it feels relaxed, but still efficient. The food was great. Whilst the Chili Momo were good, I just absolutely loved the Peanut Saardheko...worth going back just for that. The Lamb Chowella was sooo tasty (but unfortunately the lamb was a little chewy) and the Chicken Taco's and nibbles were also good. We will absolutely be going back. Thank you

We had a lovely time at Tama Eatery, and ate way too much. The fried pork dumplings and the chop suey were unexpected favorites. Everything was beautifully presented and full of flavor.

Fantastic simple little restaurant, a great find. The waitress was really helpful and helped us with our order and the food didn't disappoint. Generous helpings, super tasty, and not rushed.
The atmosphere bubbled along as the tables filled up and the kitchen was a hive of activity.
Would definitely recommend and go back again.

We LOVED Tama Eatery. We love try different foods from around the world and this Nepalese food was amazing - absolutely bursting with flavour. The servers were friendly and knowlegable. The setting basic but in a way that makes you feel at home. Even without the first table offer, the food was incredibly good value. Great vegan options. We will be back.

Delicious food at already such a reasonable price point! Generous portion sizes.

Service was rushed, felt like we were being pushed out the door when the restaurant wasn’t even half full.

Will definitely go back!

Food was sort of a hit and miss. Chicken nibbles weren't crispy nibbles just very very very very hot chicken wings. We couldn't finish them at all. Bao buns, sekuwa and fries were highlights though. Lovely atmosphere and loved the music all night.

First table gives you such a good chance to try new & different types of food. I am SO glad First Table introduced me to Tama Eatery & Nepalese food. Our waiter was from Nepal & more than helpful when it came to helping us picking our food — he even gave us a picture menu so we knew what we were ordering! The food was full of flavour, healthy, and hearty. I will be going back on my own accord!

Food was fantastic! A lovely selection of small vegetarian plates that we thoroughly enjoyed. The would recommend the Chowmein and the dumplings. The service left a little to be desired -a little slow to clear plates and refresh drinks. But hey, that’s being quite picky! Overall would highly recommend. The food is beautiful.

Food took a while to come out, but when it did!
Really great dining experience here, with amazing flavours & lovely service (although our waitress was new, so still learning.
If you like spicy, I highly recommend the chicken nibbles. We also had the big big plate which had some amazing spicy meat & delicious veges, a perfectly cooked egg and small portions of other less memorable foods. Definitely still worth getting.
Others on the table ordered a pork belly noodle soup, which they really enjoyed.
Goat curry was good and Momos (dumplings) were exceptional. Either the chicken or pork had so much flavour! Our table unanimously loved them.
Highly recommend you try Tama for unique flavours.
Personally, I loved it and will be back.

Tama Eatery is honestly such a hidden gem! Located on Upper Queen Street, you'd never realize such an amazing restaurant would be hidden there.
The service was impeccable, even met the chef himself to compliment him on his food. Between the four of us, we ordered The Big big ( MUST TRY!), the Nepal answer to Tacos, the burger, the lamb seruwa, spicy chicken nibbles, the chilli momos, and both the desserts. I could not fault anything, do try it out for an authentic Nepalese experience!

We had a good time at Tama Eatery. The vibe is cool and relaxing. Staff is attentive despite the business. The only down point is that the food portions were quite small. In the menu, the portions looked well served. We could also have been advised by the staff but didn't happen and ended up leaving still a bit hungry. Nevertheless, we had an overall good experience.

Went here for the first time to try something new. Great food, not too spicy and very tasty.

The server Esha was really helpful in explaining all the different options and specials. There was a menu with pictures as well to help visualise all the dishes.

I strongly recommend getting one of the variety dishes like the Big Big to have sample of different items. The Mo-mos (dumplings) are worth getting as well.

Over all, great street food and will be back

Interesting food selection not normally found in NZ. The tapas style menu has a strong focus on lamb dishes. The spicy chicken tacos were delicious.

Food was good, the two of us chose two different set items to try a variety of Nepalese food - the goat was my favourite!

Staff weren't as attentive as I hoped. I tried to get them to explain the items served in the set menu but they were too busy.

Lovely evening last night as discovered TAMA who make delicious Nepalese dishes. Great choice of momo's for vegan, vege and meat lovers, and then 4 ways to have them cooked. Amazing Recommend the chilli vegetarian ones, we went back for seconds on these. All the dishes are well presented, and tasty, and can be shared so you can have a little bit of everything. Menus very descriptive of ingredients, and there's a picture menu too if you're unsure of what it is. Garage beer on tap ( not sure if this standard or rotating) and a simple yet good wine list. Service was lovely - friendly attentive waitress. Great decor too. Prayer flags AND fairy lights at the entrance - whats not to love?
