Cuisine: Nepalese, Street Food, Vegan
Price Point: Mains from $15 - $25

Tama Eatery is bringing Nepali and Newari food to Auckland.

Long tables with benches form the seating plan at this restaurant which afford it a distinctly communal feel. At the end of the dining room is a stage, open for acoustic gigs and general merriment; you’ll think you’ve walked into a Nepalese market!

Specialising in tapas style small plates, they’re perfect for mixing and matching. Try the Aaloo Tama, a thick stew with black eyed beans, the lamb chowella marinated in burnt tomatoes or the Nepalese equivalent to a taco. If you’re having trouble deciding between you, go for the baji set; a colourful sharing platter bursting with bold flavours.

Have an ice-cold beer to hand with their range of household names like Heineken and Asahi as well as NZ beers on tap. Or why not indulge in their concise cocktail menu which heralds simple, delicious combinations with a no frill attitude.

Food was delicious and the waitress was very helpful in recommending dishes. We had the potato saadheko, goat curry, lamb chowella and steamed chicken momos and they were good sized portions with the perfect level of spiciness.

Very good food, this was the second time I have been to Tama. Great vegetarian and vegan options, but same for meateaters too. Interesting drinks :)

Fantastic meal and service. Both main meals we ordered (Baji Set and Ne-Thali Set) were absolutely delicious and would recommend the chicken nibbles to start - actually are really spicy which I loved. The service was amazing and accommodating, can't fault it at all, and can't wait to try more of their dishes.

Tama's food is rich in flavor, which is something we appreciated. The dumplings and tacos are the best. The servers are very attentive. We really loved our experience here.

We had a great time at Tama Eatery last night! The food was somehow very unique but delicious. We had flavours we had never tasted before which was a pleasant surprise. The service was really excellent; our server brought us rice flakes to try when we were unsure of what they were and the food arrived promptly. We will definitely be returning soon!

Loved finding this place on First Table! It's not easy finding somewhere with multiple options for the gluten free husband and myself, the vegan... but these guys had so many delicious things to choose from for BOTH of us. They also have friendly staff, a comfortably relaxed vibe and were super affordable! We definitely will be going back many, many times :)
p.s If you don't like spicy food, make sure you ask how hot the dish is before ordering. Being Nepalese cuisine they made their kai pretty firey, and I definitely got burned haha.

First table gives you such a good chance to try new & different types of food. I am SO glad First Table introduced me to Tama Eatery & Nepalese food. Our waiter was from Nepal & more than helpful when it came to helping us picking our food — he even gave us a picture menu so we knew what we were ordering! The food was full of flavour, healthy, and hearty. I will be going back on my own accord!

Tama Eatery is honestly such a hidden gem! Located on Upper Queen Street, you'd never realize such an amazing restaurant would be hidden there.
The service was impeccable, even met the chef himself to compliment him on his food. Between the four of us, we ordered The Big big ( MUST TRY!), the Nepal answer to Tacos, the burger, the lamb seruwa, spicy chicken nibbles, the chilli momos, and both the desserts. I could not fault anything, do try it out for an authentic Nepalese experience!

Lovely evening last night as discovered TAMA who make delicious Nepalese dishes. Great choice of momo's for vegan, vege and meat lovers, and then 4 ways to have them cooked. Amazing Recommend the chilli vegetarian ones, we went back for seconds on these. All the dishes are well presented, and tasty, and can be shared so you can have a little bit of everything. Menus very descriptive of ingredients, and there's a picture menu too if you're unsure of what it is. Garage beer on tap ( not sure if this standard or rotating) and a simple yet good wine list. Service was lovely - friendly attentive waitress. Great decor too. Prayer flags AND fairy lights at the entrance - whats not to love?

The restaurant had a nice atmosphere and a good location but i was quite disappointed with the vegan option as this is why i specifically wanted to come here. The portion was very small and very simple. My partner had a chicken curry style dish and he was not enamoured with it either. I also ordered a mohito which tasted as though it had no alcohol in then when i asked for another shot to be put in it came back and tasted very strange, not like a mohito at all.

The food was absolutely amazing. We got the goat curry and rice and the mushroom and pea curry and rice, and both were to die for. Super hearty, spiced and seasoned well, perfect serves and actually just so delicious. This isn't a fine dining restaurant in the best way possible, because both the food and the ambience is rustic, homely and just damn good. Our food did take a long time to come out, about half an hour after we ordered it, but it was so worth it in the end. The servers were very kind and hospitable.
My only big criticism would be the music. Western hits were quite out of place in the traditional decorations and food. I would have loved to hear something more fitting to the theme.
Otherwise, I only hope to see Tama get busier and I will definitely be back!
