In Auckland’s Wynyard Quarter, AOI 葵 Japanese Restaurant brings a refined kappo-style sensibility to lunch service.

Here, pristine ingredients take centre stage, with natural flavours honoured through balance, texture and quietly beautiful presentation - the mood’s intimate and considered, pairing authentic technique with a modern, meticulous touch.

The cooking moves with calm confidence. Assorted sashimi distils the day’s best, while salmon tataki is bright with ikura and ponzu, rounded by a whisper of olive oil, pine nut and pink pepper beneath a scatter of microgreens.

There’s playfulness too: spicy edamame dusted with shichimi - an Octopus Party of tako wasabi and sweet chilli sauce - and sushi options that glide from classic to contemporary, from the colour-streaked Rainbow Roll to a Flamed Salmon Roll layered with avocado, cheese, mayo, teriyaki and sesame.

Light, crisp mixed tempura and comforting chicken katsu show fluency in both finesse and heart, with broccolini salad and miso soup keeping things fresh and restorative.

Authentic yet forward-looking, AOI 葵 rewards guests who appreciate craft, clarity and restraint. Settle in, savour the pace, and let the detail reveal itself dish by dish. Ready to explore, one bite at a time? Book in and let the good times roll!
