Cuisine: Fusion, Indian
Price Point: Mains from $15 - $25

Follow the smell of authentic Indian street food to Wellington’s cultural quarter, where Masala has been feeding hungry locals since 2001.

Menus take inspiration from throughout the Indian subcontinent while making the most of New Zealand’s bountiful natural larder, with all ingredients sourced as locally as possible. Broccoli coated in a fragrant yoghurt marinade is served wonderfully crisp from the traditional tandoori oven, while the peshwari beef arrives unctuous with ground almond paste and gravy.

While you’ll find all your traditional favourites, the chefs keep things feeling fresh with a fabulous selection of fusion dishes. Think chicken star, succulent chunks of meat cooked in onion and tomato sauce spiked with star anise, and even curry pizza, a must try.

Long sharing tables encourage a laid back, convivial atmosphere, while an extensive wine list and heady cocktails ensure the atmosphere is always buzzing. The exotic signature serve of rum, fresh mango pulp, Cointreau and peach schnapps will instantly transport you to a fragrant mango orchard in sunny India.

Had a fantastic dinner last night. So much yummy food at really affordable prices. Our preschool children loved it too as there was lots of choices available. The favours of our curries were spectacular with just the right amount of heat for us. I loved the flaky paratha, it was delicious

Dining at Masala was a treat. There were four of us who all enjoy India cuisine. Our meal started with a shared platter which provided a great variety of interesting foods. Each of us had great experiences with our main course. My Fish Wellington and my friends Chicken Wellington were both exceptional dishes. Not only does Masala have a good wine list, we found the team to be well informed, knowledgeable and friendly.

The food was so good, and the service was excellent! Would definitely recommend Masala, as well as First Table as a 5.30 start wasn't too late and there were other patrons so we didn't feel too lonely.

Easily some of the best Indian food we have had, the lamb Wellington dish was great and my partner who is vegan had no problem finding suitable options and loved hers. The service was the highlight, super friendly!

Great experience overall and would definitely recommend to my friends and family. We were the first customers so the restaurant looked a little bit empty to walk in but the service staff made us feel very welcomed. We were amazed by the standard of service they offered (considering it's more of casual dining restaurant) as we felt well looked after.
I cannot say the food was superb. I've tried better Indian dishes before, however it was still good quality and pleasant enough to come back.
We ordered Naan bread and found it smaller than what we've previously had in other Indian restaurants. However every main dish comes with rice so overall portion wasn't small. Good value and great quality.

Another great dinner at Masala, which has become a bit of a regular spot for us due to the food options, quality and price! They even went above and beyond to play a song we requested for our friend who was being farewelled.

The food at Masala was amazing! Curry was full of flavour and the cheese and garlic naan was the best I have ever had. Would highly recommend.

Great service, the garlic and cheese naan bread was to die for - went back for seconds. Restaurant was heated which was great given the cold outside. Would recommend eating here!

Masala is a firm favourite of mine! Always a good butter chicken. Friends had lamb vindaloo and paneer tikka masala - both very happy. Enough rice for the three of us.

A below average experience! After waiting 5 minutes to be attended to, we then waited a further 5 minutes for a waitstaff to clean the one (of two) available two seated table. After the table being half cleaned (rice and cutlery still left), we were asked to sit down. Once sat down, we waited a further 15 minutes to be served, and then another 40 minutes to eat our food.. which was good - but not worth the amount of sub pair waiting we had just experienced.

Masala has the best garlic naans I have ever eaten! So soft and garlicky! The chicken korma was also the best I’ve ever had. To summarise, it was delicious!

Very nice meal and good value (even without first table) will definitely be back :-)

- dined at Masala Cafe & Bar on

The service and the food both were average. I definitely think there are better Indian places on First table than Masala cafe.

We found the meals ar Marsala to be very good value. Couldn’t fault anything. If you don’t like too much spice though, order mild - even medium here has quite a kick.
