Cuisine: A La Carte, New Zealand
Price Point: Mains from $25 - $35+

Two Fat Stags by The Bay is a cosy neighbourhood haunt with glorious waterfront views.

Owners Craig and Kaz have achieved that rare trick of creating a restaurant that has all the warmth and welcome of a friend’s home – if your friend happens to be an incredible chef of course!

Simple, home-style food cooked with care is the order of the day. Enjoy succulent steaks and beefy burgers, as well as pizza, pasta and plenty of fresh seafood.

If you’re after something a little lighter, falafel salad or garlic prawns should fit the bill, while the kid's menu will keep little ones very happy. And don’t even get us started on the dessert tasting platter…

This is a genuine gem of a restaurant with quality food at its core. If you’re in the Macandrew Bay area you’d be crazy to miss out. You won't be disappointed!

Sitting inside or outside under an umbrella are the first great choices to be made at Two Fat Stags. Love that name. We enjoyed prompt, very friendly and efficient service throughout our meal. The fresh, tasty prawn and mussel dishes were gorgeous. The meringue stack and warm fruit pudding, delightful. With a cool drink it was stunning to look over to the people on the beach and down the harbour. What a view. Looking forward to returning soon.

Beautiful location overlooking the water and right on time for the sunset. The three of us enjoyed our meals, we had the salmon, pork and the steak mains. Lovely service too.

I really wanted to give 5 stars on everything just for the burger I had and the lovely drive and location, a very pleasant evening maybe a little longer than expected but great to see a place busy. Certainly a nice place and some of the food was definitely worth it.

Lovely little restaurant. All the dishes were large portions-tasty. Chilli prawns were super spicy though. Pizza was a crispy thin base. Pasta was bountiful and delicious. My son absolutely loved the pork ribs. The dessert platter to share was a superb highlight. Great experience, specially on a sunny afternoon.

The staff are friendly and welcoming, as is the decor. We had a table in the window looking over the harbour. My husband's steak was perfectly cooked and tasted as good as it looked. I ordered pork belly which was really tender and tasty as well. It was served with garlic mash and seasonal vegetables which again were perfectly cooked and delicious. I absolutely recommend you visit this restaurant. It is perfect for an intimate dinner or a family group. Such a lovely setting.

We are so happy that Two Fat Stags has come to Macandrew Bay. It was our first visit (early Father's Day dinner) and we were so impressed. The restaurant has great views of Otago Harbour, it was so relaxing to sit in the late afternoon sun sipping our Two Fat Stags Pilsner. When the food arrived it was exquisite and definitely enough to leave us feeling satisfied. Nonetheless we tried the dessert sampler, which was a great way of choosing our faves for next time we go.

A picturesque setting and very welcoming friendly service. The meals were a great size and the steak was cooked to perfection, this made for a very enjoyable evening. Thanks "Two Fat Stags".

We had the most amazing & delicious meal, not to mention the amazing presentation on our plates, for all our courses. We also had best waiter we have ever come across. His name is Ollie, & not only was he fantastic at his job, but he was very knowledgeable on anything from the menu, the drinks, the meaning behind the name of the restaurant & its surroundings.
We highly recommend Two Fat Stags.

They made us feel very welcomed when we arrived, the service was good, and the food very tasty, and one of the best side salads i have ever tasted...and very yummy desserts.
It was our first time visiting, and had heard from others that they have great food. We would go back.

Thanks for the extra help with my husband in a wheel chair.

Four of us dined here. Good choices on menu . I asked if there was any blue cod available as it wasn’t on the menu - yes I could have pan fried or battered blue cod. I chose pan fried with fries and wilted greens - very nice but the portion of blue cod was very small.
Our friends commented on the small portion of fish I was served as well. One friend ordered a glass of red wine but her choice was not available - instead of asking her to choose another she was brought a full glass of different red wine to try - I suppose she could’ve said that she didn’t like it but it seemed strange it wasn’t suggested she might like to make another choice.
Apart from that the food was good , and sharing plates for dessert were a good suggestion from the owner. The owner was very attentive - apart from our group of four there were only 2 other people dining while we were there.

First time at Two Fat Stags. Lovely setting overlooking the harbour and made to feel welcome.
She had the Salmon filo (as they do) and I had Silence of the Lamb. Both dishes well presented and tasty.
She had trouble finishing her generous portion while I wanted more; perhaps another croquette or more vegetables. Otherwise very pleasant and great wines as well

We had a terrible experience at Two Fat Stags. We were really looking forward to trying it and some of the reviews were good so we thought we would give it a try. The lamb dish was over cooked and burnt with some flaccid under seasoned vegetables on the side. The salmon that my husband had was over cooked and dry. The skin on the salmon was also flaccid and there was no tasty sauce with it to help compensate for the terrible cooking of it. We raised our concerns with wait staff who then went to get the chef. When he came out he appeared hostile and defensive. He treated us like we were just using first table to get a cheap meal and had no plan to rectify what happened to our meals. He kept saying we got it half price on first table so we were lucky. We let him know that even if it wasn't on First table we wouldn't have paid for it. Nothing was done about this. The worst part was that he didn't even make a sincere apology about things. We were 1 of 3 groups in the restaurant at the time and the only ones who had main meals bought out so the excuses about the wait staff being the problem was not accurate. Would not done here again.

Meal was fantastic and the front of house staff were faultless. Great bunch of toys for the kids to play with as well.
Decor is pretty average, so perhaps they will freshen that up, is a bit like the 80's.
Would go again, based on the meals and service :-).
