Welcome to The Gyoza Bar, the home of authentic Japanese food in Auckland…

Minimal wooden interiors and industrial fittings embody the simple yet stylish look we have come to associate with Japan, making it an intimate spot for a catch up with friends.

All of the gyozas are made to a recipe from Kotetsu, the Gyoza bar in Fukuoka Japan that has been run by their head company for 18 years. Expect golden parcels bulging with mouth-watering fillings such as pork, prawn and wagyu beef.

Also on offer is a flavour-filled selection of Asian tapas and chef’s specials inspired by traditional izakaya restaurants. Think kaarage chicken, vegetable tempura and beef tataki. With so much on offer, there really is something to suit every palate.

The drinks list is equally diverse, including everything from Japanese whiskies to beers on tap, plum wine and sake. An expert team of bar managers are on hand to suggest special, unlisted wines to accompany your meal.

Treat yourself to an exceptional dining experience at The Gyoza Bar.

Reviews

Great early dinner! I love eating at a Japanese restaurant where the portion sizes are just right, especially when having dinner with a growing teenage boy.

The spicy pork gyoza and spicy karaage chicken were superb.

The food was tasty and excellent value for money.

Great service too, very friendly - will definitely be back.

Thank you!

I was running slightly late so called to inform them. They were polite and understanding and told me not to worry. Upon arrival I was greeted at the door and shown to my table with a smile and warm welcome. I was given just the right amount of time to chat with my friend and look at the menu before being asked by the waiter if we were ready to order. The food came out progressively which gave me time to enjoy one dish before trying the next. We were left to chat with minimal interruption from staff. At one point I looked down and didn't even notice the dirty dishes had been cleared away! We were wished a good night as we left by the staff. A+ service, one of my favs in Ponsonby.

I eating here so much I came back 10
Days later to bring other friends. A great place for casual drinks in the sun, for Ponsonby RD people watching with some well priced delicious food.Lots of options for those who new to Japanese food. The mellow classic rock in the background (Dire Straights, U2, Elton) was unexpected but fitted the mood. We’ll be back for sure

The Gyoza Bar is the example of what a restaurant should be. Great food, great service, great music, funky ambience and very reasonable prices. I've been back several times and will certainly be going back again. My personal favourite on the menu is the spicy boiled pork dumplings. Bear in mind there is some real heat to them though. Would highly recommend to anyone!

Great food and Asahi on tap. Only one minor niggle is that the whole menu is not available to First Table diners. However, even with somewhat limited choice, we still managed to order far too much! We’ll be back to try the full menu.

There's a separate, limited menu for 1st table diners - adequate small plates to share. Great gyozas. Would recommend adding some of the stir vegetables with the meal. Nice place to catch up with friends over shared plates and a drinks

First time at Gyoza Bar - very small restaurant but nice atmosphere and good music! We tried a variety of plates - chicken, prawns, beef, edamame and stir fried broccoli. Everything was really tasty and we enjoyed the evening. We then popped across the road for Duck Island ice-cream as I didn't see a dessert menu at Gyoza!

lovely little restaurant with a fantastic atmosphere, The waiter was very attentive letting us choose where to sit and the menues arrived quickly with the drinks shortly after. The music was very loud tho, a lot of rolling stones, which made talking difficult ,after asking the waiter to turn down the music and moving to another table we had a lovely evening.Would recommend the restaurant highly.

Nice little restaurant. Service was nice and friendly. Food was tasty and exceeded our expectations. Gyoza's were different from other places and tempura was also good. Favorite was the spicy Kara-age which I didn't think was too spicy but YMMV.

I treated a friend to a birthday dinner at The Gyoza Bar and from the moment we walked in we were treated like the only people in the restaurant. The food was delicious, beautifully presented and came out so fast. The service was attentive but not over the top and the person who helped me settle the bill even put his hand over the Eftpos screen so my friend couldn't see how much it was to pay me back! We will definitely be returning it was a wonderful start to our evening.

Our meal at the Gyoza bar was nothing short of incredible. We were greeted at the door by a smiling Japanese man who gave us the option of any table in the restaurant.

We sat down, ordered drinks, which arrived to the table in minutes. I would highly recommend the “Samurai” (sake, mixed with soda water & lime). Along with the drinks we ordered several small plates to start, including the ‘lotus root chips’, ‘edamame’ and ‘Nori Wasabi Chips’. All were delicious, but the latter was a standout (a must-try for your visit).

We then ordered several main plates, but the standout has to be the pork & beef Gyoza platter as well as the steamed broccoli side. The dunplings were delicious - lightly fried on one side, presented in a 12-piece ring with some tasty dipping sauces. The steamed broccoli was presented in a basket, with a tangy dipping sauce.

The place was well furnished in Japanese style, and their music playlist was on-point.

Absolutely amazing meal - would highly reccommend to everyone. Definitely returning soon...

Really yum Japanese food. Particularly enjoyed the tempura prawns and spicy fried chicken. Dumplings were also very yum. The steamed rice was a bit pricey, would normally get the same amount for $2 at other restaurants and it was $4.5 here.

we got there at 5pm, the waiter greeted us immediately and presented us with Menu, the food is good, slightly overpriced but i think it's probably because most of people come here for the drinks, I couldn't drink due to personal health reasons so that was a shame, drinks look good, inside the bar it wasn't huge space but it's perfect for bringing a few mates to a drink or having a casual date. only thing was that their website was showing old menu, a couple of things i was after no longer available. but overall the experience is good. good location too.
