Grinding together excellent service with family values, Mortar & Pestle is the newest hangout for artists, writers and families alike.

When we say it’s ‘fresh outta the bag’, we mean it. This chic little café only opened at the beginning of September. Needless to say, it’s smart, sharp, really looks the part and is awaiting your verdict.

Start your day right with a nutritious bowl of oats and chia seed porridge or some crushed avo with the delightful addition of crunchy peas on sourdough. Gorge on brekkie goodness in the form of french toast, a breakfast burger or gin-cured salmon. Hello, fancy pants!

For lunch and dinner, it’s an international affair with butter chicken, bangers and mash and mac n’ cheese making up the menu. Make an occasion of it and bookend your main with a whole baked camembert or patatas bravas to start and a decadent coffee and cream pavlova to finish.

Reviews

We had a great time at Mortar & Pestle, the location is idyllic and plenty of different seating options for every need. With a menu that ticks all the boxes, no matter what mood you’re in there will always be something for you to get excited for.
The service was second to none, even though they were busy, the owner would go out of his way to check that everything was just what we needed.
A place who truly cares about their customer service, extremely big fan!

- dined at Mortar & Pestle on

This was the first time we had dined at Mortar and Pestle and we absolutely loved it. My partner had the French Toast and he said it was the best French Toast he's ever had. I had smashed avocado with peas, eggs and bacon and that was absolutely delicious. Outstanding food, coffee was amazing and the service brilliant as well. We have now found ourselves a new place for breakfast. Keen to try their lunch next.

- dined at Mortar & Pestle on

Great experience. We all chose a different shared plate as a starter. Pork ribs, shiitake dumplings, fried camembert and spicy chicken. All really good and even filled one of our party up so much, that they couldn't manage the main course. Very satisfying main courses and we even made room for a shared dessert. Nice, attentive service.

Loved our dinner here – service was brilliant and the food was to die for. The baked camembert in particular was unbelievably delicious. I haven't stopped thinking about it since. We'll definitely be back soon for more!

Came here with a few friends and were quickly shown a few seats we could take. The wait staff were very friendly and gracious. I ordered the chicken burger and it was fantastic! There was just the right amount of sauce and the crispiness of the chicken was perfect. Highly enjoyed the experience and would come again.

The service was wonderful right from the time we walked through the door. The very friendly waitress had only been there 3 days and was super lovely and welcoming. We were keen to try a few things from this new place in town so we have the dumplings (they were really good), the pea/bacon/lettuce side (this was a big hit for me, loved the smokey flavour), the crushed potatoes (weren't as good as we hoped, they weren't crispy at all), the pork belly main (this was tasty, could have had more sauce though) and the broccolini was good, nice and firm to bite. We also shared three desserts (omg yes.. a bit too much lol but it was worth it). The coffee pav was ok, the dirty donut was really good and the apple & rhubarb crumble was by far the best! This will be a nice relaxed dining experience, cafe style for summer!

Food was amazing! There was so much flavour and definitely left wanting to come back and try more of the menu. There was only 2 staff members on though so by time we left, one was on a break which meant the service slowed down. Overall was a great place!

Have heard good things about this cafe, and decided to book us a table for date night. To our delight, they offered a 7pm booking on Thursdays, which suits us because we usually eat later than the average couple. I read heaps of reviews to decide what we should order, and the most popular item I saw tons of hype for, the Spicy Chicken Burger with cross cut fries did not disappoint. It was AMAZING, easily the best burger we've had. We also ordered the Steak and Shoestring Fries, and it was delicious and expertly prepared, but we actually thought the burger was the Star of the Show. We can't wait to go back again!

- dined at Mortar & Pestle on

We live out in Kumeu so rarely hang out in Takapuna but saw the first table deal and gave it a try and it didn’t disappoint! To share we ordered the keto fried chicken, spicy fish tartare, fried goat cheese balls (omg soooo delicious and creamy) and the shitake mushroom dumplings which we loved. For mains we had the wild mushroom papadelle and crispy pork belly which melted in my mouth with a good amount of crackling on top. We will definitely be back for more. The staff was very friendly and helpful with the menu too!

Motar and Pestle is such a great place to eat. The food is super healthy and fresh and the flavours are matched perfectly. Good selection of sides too. The desserts are a creation in themselves. Staff were lovely as well. Have dined here before and will continue to visit. The owner/boss was overseeing the evening and was very welcoming.

Such a delicious brunch here!! The service was outstanding - such friendly staff and they let us change our booking from 2 people to 4 people only the day before with no hassle at all.
We all thought the food was absolutely top notch - flavoursome, interesting combinations, perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. We have told loads of people to head along and dine here. Thanks Mortar & Pestle!! We will definitely be back :)

- dined at Mortar & Pestle on

We went for lunch. The menu had varied choices. The service was great, the manager/owner was exceptionally pleasant and jovial.

The food was so great but the service was even better!! Lovely people who looked after us like full-paying customers (we had First table booking). Definitely coming back and passing this on to friends!

- dined at Mortar & Pestle on

We came here the other night, and my friend had a long list of complicated dietary requirements from the doctor. The staff were so lovely and accommodating (service was definitely a 12/10 especially from the chefs having to deal with this).
The food was quite good and the prices are great especially with first tables.

- dined at Mortar & Pestle on

Billie Dalgety

Excellent setting & mood lighting. Service was great. Food was amazing, nothing to fault! We ordered 5 different plates to share and finished everything between the 2 of us, even the last potato before the waitress took our plates away. Patatas Bravas was 10/10 - must try dish.

Casual dining. Beautiful food and lovely waitress. The desserts were amazing, especially the Meringue. Would dine again.

- dined at Mortar & Pestle on

Used First Table to visit Mortar and Pestle for the first time. The food was excellent and the service friendly and helpful. Loved the simple tasty menu, tasty mocktail selection and well priced. Only gripe, we thought the sides were priced a little high, but loved seeing lettuce, peas & bacon as a side.

- dined at Mortar & Pestle on

Went for lunch with our 2 small granddaughters
Great choice for them.
I had steak with Paris butter house salad....delicious
My husband had bangers and mash with a twist of picked sautéed onions....equally delicious.
Would highly recommend this place.

We came for lunch and although the lunch menu seemed quite light and simple at first, we were highly impressed with the quality of our meals. The spicy chicken burger with the waffle fries was delicious as was the vegan bowl. We shared a dessert of apple and rhubarb crumble and it was so good that we had to share another dessert: the dirty doughnut did not disappoint either.
Hats off to the chef!
Overall, we were pleasantly surprised with this new Takapuna addition and we look forward to come and try the breakfast and dinner menus which looks even more promising.

- dined at Mortar & Pestle on

As soon as we walked into Mortar & Pestle, we were immediately greeted by a friendly staff. Had the baked Camembert with garlic toast to start, so yum with the chili oil in it. Mains definitely did not disappoint either- had the mushroom pappardelle with truffle cream sauce & vegan bowl.
With its dimmed lights setting, the atmosphere was cozy & intimate, great for a casual night out. Thank you Mortar & Pestle, we had a lovely evening.

The last-minute booking was a decision well made. The chicken burger was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. We shared a plate of truffle mash and it was truly superb. Highly recommend. Even with our stomachs at capacity we were still toying with the dessert options in the cabinet when paying. Mouth-watering.
Great value, great service and great food. Can't ask for much else really.

An excellent new addition to the Takapuna eateries. The food was fantastic and atmosphere upbeat but still quiet enough to be able to have a decent conversation. I loved the shiitake mushroom and garlic dumplings. Only negative for me was the initial service for drinks was slow.

The food was excellent, but the service didn't follow.Even though the restaurant was a very leisurely,
I had to wait for more than 30 minutes and the drink came out in advance and ran out of fizzy.

Some employees were friendly but not others and didn't get a very good image.

Maybe my idea of using this "discount coupon" guest may have been more sensitive to.

As a result, food is great, but I don't want to go again.

We always choose to dine somewhere that first table offers which means we get to try different restaurants that we wouldn’t normally try! Unfortunately our experience at Mortar & pestle was quite average... strange mix of food choices & cabinet food I feel like they havnt found their style yet. They had no coke and a few other things we asked for. It’s a great location And there’s definitely room for improvement.

Been meaning to try out Mortar and Pestle ever since they opened, and they really lived up to the hype. I think I’ve found my new favourite breakfast spot on the shore. Their chia and oat porridge smelled incredible when it came out- think it was thanks to the vanilla-infused berries. All of the topping flavours worked so well together, and it was some of the best porridge I’ve had in a while. Their whole menu is filled with so many great options (Mac and cheese croissant, brioche French toast), and their cabinet food also looked incredible. The server was very attentive and friendly - can’t wait to go back many times this summer.
