Start your day right with a nutritious bowl of oats and chia seed porridge or some crushed avo with the delightful addition of crunchy peas on sourdough. Gorge on brekkie goodness in the form of french toast, a breakfast burger or gin-cured salmon. Hello, fancy pants!

For lunch and dinner, it’s an international affair with butter chicken, bangers and mash and mac n’ cheese making up the menu. Make an occasion of it and bookend your main with a whole baked camembert or patatas bravas to start and a decadent coffee and cream pavlova to finish.

Such a good dinner! First time using first table and we will be using it again! The food was delicious! Really enjoyed the keto fried chicken! and staff were attentive and made sure we were well looked after and always asked if we needed anything!

Really cool atmosphere, good sized portions, I really loved the Keto Fired Chicken - really yummy! Would have been really awesome to have burgers included on the dinner menu - the photos of their lunch burgers looked so appetising and made me want to order one! Mortar & Pestle was a great find, so glad we booked here!

Being here for lunch previously we had high expectations walking in, these expectations were not let down. The friendly warm welcome and prompt non pressured service was exceptional. There was no real wait for the starters of which were delicious. Highly recommend the Keto Chicken! The mains were brought over soon after and these meals were scrumptious, large portions of which we didn't factor in when ordering our starters. The diversity of drinks really toped off the experience, from non-alcoholic options which are very tasty to selection of craft beers and wines. Overall excellent.

Loved the food at Mortar & Pestle, in fact it was such a tough choice for mains that we ordered 3 for the 2 of us. We can recommend the steak, baked salmon and pork belly, all very interesting dishes. For starters we had the salmon tartare and the baked cheese which was amazing. Followed by a Dirty Donut for dessert, which you'll be happy to know we shared!

Awesome food. Loved the vegan options. Lots of flavours. Will be back for sure.

Amazing food! Their menu items cover all different origins from Dumplings to Fried chicken to baked Camembert. We ordered A LOT of shared plates so we could sample a variety of tastes and flavours and were not disappointed. Very talented chefs whipping up delights in the kitchen.
Didn’t try dessert as we wanted to save something for our next visit. Definitely check this place out when you’re next in Taka (bonus walking distance to the beach!)

Had a lovely meal at Mortar and Pestle on a quiet Saturday night. We ordered two mains (Pork Belly and Mushroom Pappardelle) and two sides (Shoestring Fries and Brocollini) to share and that was ample for the two of us.

Service was friendly. Parking could be a bit of a mission.

We had a great time at Mortar & Pestle, the location is idyllic and plenty of different seating options for every need. With a menu that ticks all the boxes, no matter what mood you’re in there will always be something for you to get excited for.
The service was second to none, even though they were busy, the owner would go out of his way to check that everything was just what we needed.
A place who truly cares about their customer service, extremely big fan!

This was the first time we had dined at Mortar and Pestle and we absolutely loved it. My partner had the French Toast and he said it was the best French Toast he's ever had. I had smashed avocado with peas, eggs and bacon and that was absolutely delicious. Outstanding food, coffee was amazing and the service brilliant as well. We have now found ourselves a new place for breakfast. Keen to try their lunch next.

- dined at Mortar & Pestle on

Great experience. We all chose a different shared plate as a starter. Pork ribs, shiitake dumplings, fried camembert and spicy chicken. All really good and even filled one of our party up so much, that they couldn't manage the main course. Very satisfying main courses and we even made room for a shared dessert. Nice, attentive service.

Came here with a few friends and were quickly shown a few seats we could take. The wait staff were very friendly and gracious. I ordered the chicken burger and it was fantastic! There was just the right amount of sauce and the crispiness of the chicken was perfect. Highly enjoyed the experience and would come again.

What a great experience! The service was very attentive and friendly and offered food which was not on the lunch menu. The food we both ordered the steak and chips, this was delicious and very filling for a lunch, fried chicken was also great. Will definitely look at coming back for dinner!

The service was wonderful right from the time we walked through the door. The very friendly waitress had only been there 3 days and was super lovely and welcoming. We were keen to try a few things from this new place in town so we have the dumplings (they were really good), the pea/bacon/lettuce side (this was a big hit for me, loved the smokey flavour), the crushed potatoes (weren't as good as we hoped, they weren't crispy at all), the pork belly main (this was tasty, could have had more sauce though) and the broccolini was good, nice and firm to bite. We also shared three desserts (omg yes.. a bit too much lol but it was worth it). The coffee pav was ok, the dirty donut was really good and the apple & rhubarb crumble was by far the best! This will be a nice relaxed dining experience, cafe style for summer!

Seriously!!!!!! SERIOUSLY!!!! I think I have the BEST EVER breakfast I have ever had anywhere in the world.....

I tried a dish that I never eat because the description on the menu sounded so good... French Toast.... The dish was crafted to perfection... tasted like heaven..... and was a true experience to eat.

On top of this the coffee was exceptional,,, service impeccable... so in all the experience was an 11 out of 10... and will be hard to beat.

This is a truly lovely restaurant with great service, wonderful hosts and simply peaceful.... WOW What a Find!!!!

I will definitely be back

Food was amazing! There was so much flavour and definitely left wanting to come back and try more of the menu. There was only 2 staff members on though so by time we left, one was on a break which meant the service slowed down. Overall was a great place!

Have heard good things about this cafe, and decided to book us a table for date night. To our delight, they offered a 7pm booking on Thursdays, which suits us because we usually eat later than the average couple. I read heaps of reviews to decide what we should order, and the most popular item I saw tons of hype for, the Spicy Chicken Burger with cross cut fries did not disappoint. It was AMAZING, easily the best burger we've had. We also ordered the Steak and Shoestring Fries, and it was delicious and expertly prepared, but we actually thought the burger was the Star of the Show. We can't wait to go back again!

- dined at Mortar & Pestle on

Friendly staff, generous portions, delicious food and lovely atmosphere. Thanks for a lovely evening :)

We live out in Kumeu so rarely hang out in Takapuna but saw the first table deal and gave it a try and it didn’t disappoint! To share we ordered the keto fried chicken, spicy fish tartare, fried goat cheese balls (omg soooo delicious and creamy) and the shitake mushroom dumplings which we loved. For mains we had the wild mushroom papadelle and crispy pork belly which melted in my mouth with a good amount of crackling on top. We will definitely be back for more. The staff was very friendly and helpful with the menu too!

Motar and Pestle is such a great place to eat. The food is super healthy and fresh and the flavours are matched perfectly. Good selection of sides too. The desserts are a creation in themselves. Staff were lovely as well. Have dined here before and will continue to visit. The owner/boss was overseeing the evening and was very welcoming.

Such a delicious brunch here!! The service was outstanding - such friendly staff and they let us change our booking from 2 people to 4 people only the day before with no hassle at all.
We all thought the food was absolutely top notch - flavoursome, interesting combinations, perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. We have told loads of people to head along and dine here. Thanks Mortar & Pestle!! We will definitely be back :)

- dined at Mortar & Pestle on

We came here the other night, and my friend had a long list of complicated dietary requirements from the doctor. The staff were so lovely and accommodating (service was definitely a 12/10 especially from the chefs having to deal with this).
The food was quite good and the prices are great especially with first tables.

Excellent setting & mood lighting. Service was great. Food was amazing, nothing to fault! We ordered 5 different plates to share and finished everything between the 2 of us, even the last potato before the waitress took our plates away. Patatas Bravas was 10/10 - must try dish.

Used First Table to visit Mortar and Pestle for the first time. The food was excellent and the service friendly and helpful. Loved the simple tasty menu, tasty mocktail selection and well priced. Only gripe, we thought the sides were priced a little high, but loved seeing lettuce, peas & bacon as a side.

We came for lunch and although the lunch menu seemed quite light and simple at first, we were highly impressed with the quality of our meals. The spicy chicken burger with the waffle fries was delicious as was the vegan bowl. We shared a dessert of apple and rhubarb crumble and it was so good that we had to share another dessert: the dirty doughnut did not disappoint either.
Hats off to the chef!
Overall, we were pleasantly surprised with this new Takapuna addition and we look forward to come and try the breakfast and dinner menus which looks even more promising.

- dined at Mortar & Pestle on

As soon as we walked into Mortar & Pestle, we were immediately greeted by a friendly staff. Had the baked Camembert with garlic toast to start, so yum with the chili oil in it. Mains definitely did not disappoint either- had the mushroom pappardelle with truffle cream sauce & vegan bowl.
With its dimmed lights setting, the atmosphere was cozy & intimate, great for a casual night out. Thank you Mortar & Pestle, we had a lovely evening.

The last-minute booking was a decision well made. The chicken burger was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. We shared a plate of truffle mash and it was truly superb. Highly recommend. Even with our stomachs at capacity we were still toying with the dessert options in the cabinet when paying. Mouth-watering.
Great value, great service and great food. Can't ask for much else really.

An excellent new addition to the Takapuna eateries. The food was fantastic and atmosphere upbeat but still quiet enough to be able to have a decent conversation. I loved the shiitake mushroom and garlic dumplings. Only negative for me was the initial service for drinks was slow.

A good standard Eggs benny, portion size is a little small for the price but it was a very tasty gin cured salmon; coffee was great. The place is nice but the menus did them a disservice as they felt a little grubby. Nice ice cream options!

Service was great and we had a lovely, friendly waitress, but the food really wasn’t the best. While it came out pretty quickly, it didn’t taste the best. The pork belly wasn’t fresh, it was dry and chewy, the chicken burger didn’t taste great but the waffle fries were awesome! The butter chicken was nice. I had the donut for dessert which was super super good! But the apple crumble was really horrible. My partner had it and I tried a bit and he felt sick for the rest of the night afterwards. Presentation of the food was excellent, just the quality and taste of the actual food wasn’t unfortunately. Great, friendly staff though!
