Cuisine: Cafe, International, New Zealand
Price Point: Mains from $20 - $35+

Grinding together excellent service with family values, Mortar & Pestle is the newest hangout for artists, writers and families alike.

When we say it’s ‘fresh outta the bag’, we mean it. This chic little café only opened at the beginning of September. Needless to say, it’s smart, sharp, really looks the part and is awaiting your verdict.

Start your day right with a nutritious bowl of oats and chia seed porridge or some crushed avo with the delightful addition of crunchy peas on sourdough. Gorge on brekkie goodness in the form of french toast, a breakfast burger or gin-cured salmon. Hello, fancy pants!

For lunch and dinner, it’s an international affair with butter chicken, bangers and mash and mac n’ cheese making up the menu. Make an occasion of it and bookend your main with a whole baked camembert or patatas bravas to start and a decadent coffee and cream pavlova to finish.

Amazing food both dinner and brunch. Great cocktails and coffee. We went back the next day!

The food was so great but the service was even better!! Lovely people who looked after us like full-paying customers (we had First table booking). Definitely coming back and passing this on to friends!

We came here the other night, and my friend had a long list of complicated dietary requirements from the doctor. The staff were so lovely and accommodating (service was definitely a 12/10 especially from the chefs having to deal with this).
The food was quite good and the prices are great especially with first tables.

Excellent setting & mood lighting. Service was great. Food was amazing, nothing to fault! We ordered 5 different plates to share and finished everything between the 2 of us, even the last potato before the waitress took our plates away. Patatas Bravas was 10/10 - must try dish.

Casual dining. Beautiful food and lovely waitress. The desserts were amazing, especially the Meringue. Would dine again.

Used First Table to visit Mortar and Pestle for the first time. The food was excellent and the service friendly and helpful. Loved the simple tasty menu, tasty mocktail selection and well priced. Only gripe, we thought the sides were priced a little high, but loved seeing lettuce, peas & bacon as a side.

Excellent food and service.

Went for lunch with our 2 small granddaughters
Great choice for them.
I had steak with Paris butter house salad....delicious
My husband had bangers and mash with a twist of picked sautéed onions....equally delicious.
Would highly recommend this place.

We came for lunch and although the lunch menu seemed quite light and simple at first, we were highly impressed with the quality of our meals. The spicy chicken burger with the waffle fries was delicious as was the vegan bowl. We shared a dessert of apple and rhubarb crumble and it was so good that we had to share another dessert: the dirty doughnut did not disappoint either.
Hats off to the chef!
Overall, we were pleasantly surprised with this new Takapuna addition and we look forward to come and try the breakfast and dinner menus which looks even more promising.

As soon as we walked into Mortar & Pestle, we were immediately greeted by a friendly staff. Had the baked Camembert with garlic toast to start, so yum with the chili oil in it. Mains definitely did not disappoint either- had the mushroom pappardelle with truffle cream sauce & vegan bowl.
With its dimmed lights setting, the atmosphere was cozy & intimate, great for a casual night out. Thank you Mortar & Pestle, we had a lovely evening.

The last-minute booking was a decision well made. The chicken burger was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. We shared a plate of truffle mash and it was truly superb. Highly recommend. Even with our stomachs at capacity we were still toying with the dessert options in the cabinet when paying. Mouth-watering.
Great value, great service and great food. Can't ask for much else really.

An excellent new addition to the Takapuna eateries. The food was fantastic and atmosphere upbeat but still quiet enough to be able to have a decent conversation. I loved the shiitake mushroom and garlic dumplings. Only negative for me was the initial service for drinks was slow.
