Cuisine: Asian, International, Street Food
Price Point: Mains from $10 - $20

Renowned for its take on international food, Tucks & Bao is an all-day bar and eatery that serves tasty morsels alongside NZ's finest craft beer.

Taking the communal factor from street-food markets, Tucks & Bao has an infectious atmosphere that'll leave you with a spring in your step. Inside it's understated and chilled and outside it's all going on, with informal tables and a groovy wicker fence that places you in the tropics. No complaints from us!

Everyone loves a bao bun and here they're filled with delicious combos you won't find elsewhere! You've got the classic pork belly bao, pulled pork and chicken and shrimp. There's also a beef burger bao with cheese as well as battered fish and one with crispy tofu. But let's not forget the tucks. Contrast the softness of the bao with the crunchiness of an edamame bean salad or stir-fried Asian greens with heaps of herbs and spices. That's not all, there are vegan, vegetarian and kids options so get the whole gang involved!

Thankfully, no matter what the weather, it's always summer here, thanks to their tropical cocktails. Keep your cool with the berry nice froze, ginger ninja or frozen margherita. If you're after a crafty number, ask the friendly staff for their recommendations.

My husband and I had an excellent time at Tucks & Bao when we went there for lunch. We ordered 5 items from the Tucks portion of the menu because we have to stick to gluten-free options. We had Mrs Salt & Mr Pepper (tender lemon-pepper calamari w/ lime aioli), The Prawnbroker (popcorn shrimp w/ sriracha mayo), Clucking Good (boneless crispy chicken w/ truffle mayo), Miss Piggy (roasted pork belly slices w/ vermicelli salad and hoisin dip), and Pork Fiction (tender pork ribs w/ tangy Tuck's sauce). We enjoyed all the dishes and we were very full afterwards! The portion sizes were good, though next time we'll probably order only 3 items.

As for recommendations (if you had to choose only one item), if you want something to get you as full as possible, you get the biggest portion with the Pork Fiction. Tender ribs with a decent amount of meat. Either that or Clucking Good.

For something a bit different, I recommend the Miss Piggy.

If you want crispy, comforting, and bursting with flavour, I suggest ordering The Prawnbroker, or the Mrs Salt & Mr Pepper if you prefer squid.

The interior is spacious, but still cosy. You can choose to sit indoors or outdoors and is a good place for groups. There were a few groups having lunch over their work break, as well as smaller tables of 1 to 2 people just enjoying a coffee or other drinks.

We did not order the Baos because of the gluten (they do have a gluten-free option where you can swap the Baos with lettuce, but, personally, I'd rather pay more for a GF Bao than have it with lettuce.)

All in all, we enjoyed our time there and would definitely come back again.

Service was great and food was excellent, can really recommend the Tucks Platter. The calamari was the most tender I’ve ever had in a restaurant.

Dined early on a Thursday night, service was exemplary, not in your face but around when you needed them.
Food was absolutely delicious and servings were generous, 4 plates between 2 of us certainly sufficed.
Will be back for sure.
