We enjoyed the story and atmosphere of Alice May. It made for an interesting read. This was followed by attentive staff and delicious food. Our favourites were the garlic loaf, absolutely delicious and dessert. Huge serving and to die for.

Everything was perfect. We ordered a salmon with peas risotto and a zesty lemon sauce fish with sweet corn cakes. Both of them were beautiful. The suggested matched wines worked fine with the food. Service was great and all staff were friendly. The history behind the restaurant’s name is also an enjoyable trip. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a great food in Franz Josef.

The moment you step inside, you are captivated by the story of Alice May. The welcome warmth of the open fire and the hospitality of the staff stand in sharp contrast to the life of the woman to whom this restaurant is connected.
The beef, salmon and lamb were all perfectly cooked and presented. A little decadent fudge cake to finish, balanced by the refreshing tartness of the raspberry, all ensured our 24th wedding anniversary was most memorable. Thank you!

Must visit at Franz Josef! We love the vibe and warmth of the place and people at Alice May. All recommendations by the lady who served us were delicious. The decor of the restaurant, inspired by real person and events is just gorgeous. Fireplace was lit when we were there. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner here.

The staff were very pleasant and helpful.
Our entree and deserts were fantastic. Sadly our mains were below par. The staff were very understanding and did communicate this to the chefs. Overall we would eat there again with double helpings of dessert

It’s not often I can’t find a single fault at a restaurant.

The restaurant itself has a story as it is dedicated to the owners grandmother and her incredible story. There are plaques around the restaurant to tell her story and they’ve been beautifully presented. There is plenty of seating weather you’re a big group or just a couple and there is an open fire to keep you warm if it’s a cold night. There is also outdoor seating, however we chose to sit by the fire!

The service is fantastic! All the servers were very friendly and happy to help with anything. Our waitress was great and checked on us after our food came to make sure we were happy with everything (which we were).

There is a great selection of food with varying prices so there is something for everyone. I ordered the beer battered fish with chips and it was delicious. Very big fillets of fish and the plate was filled with food so it was great quantity as well as quality. Our food was prepared in a timely manner and came within a good time of us finishing our starters. Whilst we wanted dessert, we were very full from the starts and mains. However, on the menu it explains that they are happy to prepare desserts as take always so that’s what we did. I was very surprised to find actual plastic containers for the desserts that I will happily reuse at home! I was expecting a more temporary take away container but this meant that the hot dessert could be stored away for later without me worrying about it ruining the container (as I would with cardboard).

Overall, this restaurant provides amazing food, amazing service and an amazing story. I will happily eat here again and am disappointed I didn’t get a chance for a second visit during my short stay at Franz Joseph.

The place it's self is great. Well set out and warm. Our waitress was awesome she is a very bubbley and knows her menu great service.
We had the ribeye I'm not sure if it is the chef's fault or not but the steak was tuff and full of grisel so not nice. And the vege could have used a few more minutes in the head.

Can not fault the food or service at Alice May. The portion size was more than generous and each starter and main was fantastic. We had the mussels and calamari which were lovely, and the pork belly and lamb shanks. The pork belly was a very decent portion and the vegetables with both dishes were cooked perfectly. Would definitely return.

Our apps---a couple of seafood chowders and a whitebait souffle---were scrumptious. Our tasty mains came in such large portions that we had more than enough to share amongst ourselves. Everything was delicious, just the ticket before a day of hiking on the glacier. Moreover, the restaurant was filled to the rafters with diners who looked like they were all having a good time.

First class restaurant offering first class service. The food was absolutely delicious. One of the best meals in NZ. We were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived to the time of leaving. The Italian waitress was very professional and friendly. Our australian waiter added alot of humour to the experience. I am from Napier so the story behind this was quite overwhelming. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Franz Josef. Thank-you for a memorable evening.

Great service. 3 out of 4 meals were very satisfying and the 4th was ok but the salmon and risotto were a bit bland and could have done with a bit of lemon or similar.

The service was excellent, and food was bought out really fast.
The calamari was delicious, but the mains were just ok.
I asked.for a medium steak, and it was rare.
The mains menu is a lot of stuff that you would cook at home.
It was a nice dining experience

Good restaurant in a small tourist town, showcasing NZ food. The ribs dish is massive and uses good quality meat so go for that if you are hungry. I am very impressed with the kids roast pork meal too. The beef cheek dish, mussels starter and kids fish and chips seem slightly on the small side(esp compared to the other two dishes we ordered) but overall a good experience. Service is excellent. The restaurant was super popular and had people waiting for tables.

Had a wonderful dining experience here. Service was first class, friendly and cheerful. We had an entree of arancini balls followed by mains of steak and lamb shank. All cooked to perfection and very tasty. And to cap of the night the sticky date and choc fudge desserts were sensational. Thanks Alice May and staff for a great night
