Cuisine: Fusion, New Zealand, South Asian
Price Point: Mains from $25 - $35

Specialising in spellbinding and innovative savoury flavours, Umami is South East Asian cuisine with that unmistakable Kiwi twist.

As soon as you walk in, you are whisked away to a enchanted land. Bamboo lines the walls creating a cosy, cabin-like feel; the perfect getaway from everyday life. The space is softly lit by dozens of beautiful lanterns that glimmer in the ornate mirrors. A slice of paradise to say the least.

The menu is centered around sharing plates so why not try a bit of everything! Start with some fluffy bao buns filled with everything from pork belly to eggplant katsu, or get some moreish karaage chicken in. If you're into your seafood, there are some Hanoi crab cakes or some tender grilled salmon teriyaki to satiate your appetite.

If meat is your jam, look no further than the massaman duck curry or beef short rib that comes with potato mash and charred corn. Make a real feast of it with some sides like kimchi, roti bread or some simple steamed rice. You might need to be rolled home.

The pork belly with Kimchi combination was so yummy. Crackling pork was super crackling! Other dishes were good too and we will definitely go back

A nice warm and comforting (on a Winter's Night) restaurant with excellent wait staff. While the food was good, it didn't seem outstanding. It is touted as a share plate menu, with all items to be shared, yet the Bao Buns came as a single bun and not easy to cut and share. The chef could have cut it or better still let me know at time of ordering and I would have ordered two.
Good house wines and well priced.

We had such amazing food here, best we've had for awhile. Everything was deliciously cooked, unique in its way and totally lived up its fusion style. The service was friendly, detailed and attention. The atmosphere was warm, comfortably lively and we loved the music which was just loud enough to lift our spirits but not noisy and distracting. The fit out is modern, charming and we can see the effort and expense that has gone into every detail. A very satisfying night out where our expectations were totally exceeded. We'll be back for more!
