Cuisine: Degustation, Modern European
Price Point: Mains from $25 - $35+

Setting up camp at what was Wine Chambers, The General offers an unforgettable dining experience centred around contemporary food.

The interior is as grand as it sounds. With its enormous windows, towering ceilings and cream walls, it has a distinct Georgian feel but with a modern twist. Its white and dark-brown colour scheme is minimalist and classy; the perfect place for a special occasion.

The menu delivers on exquisite taste and presentation. Start with some delicate tuna tartar before moving on to the free range pulled chicken that comes with seasonal greens and garlic yoghurt. The halloumi dish is complete with pumpkin hummus whilst the hanger steak certainly won't leave you hungry!

Indulge in the locally sourced produce with a glass of fine NZ wine and be sure to have your camera at the ready; the food wouldn't be out of place in a museum!

What a fantastic way to try out somewhere a bit posh without the added expense. My 3 course meal was delicious. Very generous liver parfait, steak cooked to perfection and decadent dessert. All presented beautifully. Lovely staff and awesome music. Highly recommend.

The service, food, and ambiance all exceeded our expectations!

The General is a little hidden gem on Shortland Street. We were the only dinners for at least a good 1hr or more but that didn't bother us as the place is cute yet understated elegance, and the waiter was extremely attentive and helpful.

We ordered an entire bottle of Rosé and had entrees, mains, and dessert - because 'why not?!'. The set menu actually makes it easier to order, because the options aren't overwhelming.

For an entrée we shared the pate, it was phenomenal - absolutely mouthwatering. If it's still on offer you should get it!

For mains I had the pork - it was melt in your mouth perfection and the roasted vegetables served with it were perfectly cooked. My friend had the vegetarian risotto and it was delicately flavoured and balanced to perfection.

For dessert we both had the chocolate fondant - it was so decadently rich, lovely and gooey, and the perfect way to cap off our night!

Don't let the quietness of this cute little restaurant deter you - it really is a hidden gem. The location is in the heart of the city, close to everything, and the staff are super friendly, the food is outstanding. They have an excellent wine list and the atmosphere here is one of relaxation and quiet elegance.

Go check it out and you'll discover a new favourite just like we have!

Small but perfectly formed.
Never been to this place, so thought we would try it for our wedding anniversary. Walked up Shortland Street and couldn't see it, finally found a small sign on the footpath saying The General.
We were warmly greeted and seated by the window. The restaurant is set in a beautiful old building, and was cozy yet elegant. The service was great, not over bearing and gave us time to think about what we wanted.

Had a starter, main and shared a dessert and it was delicious, the meals were a good size, but they were very satisfying, there was a combination of flavours and textures that really made our evening so delightful.

Will definitely go back!!

When I arrived, I was given a broken seat. There was no waiting staff around so I grabbed a seat next to me and it too was broken. My third seat was finally safe to sit on.

The food was a set menu with limited options. The prawns tasted frozen, beef ragout was over cooked and noodles stuck to each other and the dessert looks like supermarket bought.

Would not recommend.

Dinner was a set menu. Entree- Prawn was average but duck parfait is good. For main we ordered Fish of the day- it was trevally with pumpkin sauce, pistachios and brussels sprouts- fish was average. Then for dessert we try one of each- chocolate fondue- that looks like it comes out in a microwave with ice cream on top. Pavlova taste eggy- grocery bought taste.
I could have attached the photo in here but no option for that. Ambiance was ok. Not much selection or option on their menu. Thank goodness it’s on first table because it’s not worth it to try on a regular price.

Minimal menu choices made it easy to choose, food was good maybe a little on the salty side. Service was fine but lacked a bit of welcoming attitude.

Very disappointed. Entree was OK but I like a 5-10min break between courses. Waiter brought main out before entree plates were cleared and without asking if we were ready. Which leads to my main. My beef ragu was very dry. And waiter came to ask if I was ready for dessert before I had finished my main. I don't like to be rushed through my meal.

My mum and I thought the food was delicious and the dessert was just right! Would come here again and bring the hubby. Highly recommend.

Was alright went a few months ago and was a lot better maybe new chefs or whatever wasnt as good as was expecting but food was still good happy.

Food delicious, cheese platter was average. Fantastic Service.

The entree was not bad at all. The main was really good chicken and flavour. The steak was tough from my partner. And the choice of dessert was apple crumble or cheese platter (im not sure if the cheese belongs there). The dessert doesn’t make you feel “wow” imagine green apple diced add sugar and cook, then just add crumbs and small scoop of vanilla ice cream.
