Hugo's Bistro invites you to join them for bistro classics with a modern spin.

All the way from rainy England is head chef Alfie Ingham, who brings with him his passion for seasonal ingredients and ethically sourced proteins, much of which is barbecued over our charcoal fire.

Inspired by loud and fun bistro's in Paris, Alfie applies classical cooking techniques to New Zealand produce. For starters, there's a delicate pork terrine, black Angus tartare and charred octopus that comes with a smoky chorizo vinaigrette.

But it's not just the food that does the talking; the room is a balance of brass and terrazzo, paired with subtle tones of green and blush. A feature marble bartop runs the length of the room and provides a perfect perching spot to see the chefs work in the open kitchen.

Reviews

This was our first time trying out First Table and first time dining at Hugo’s Bistro. The food was excellent, great for sharing between 2. The atmosphere and service was really chilled which is exactly what we enjoy when dining. We’ll definitely be going back

10 out of 10. This was the best first table experience in ages. Everything was spot on.

Wait staff, food, environment, even the loos were first rate. Highly recommended.

I've heard a lot about this place before I had the chance to dine there with some friends. Hugo's certainly lived up to expectations! I had the steak and it was perfectly medium rare. The pepper sauce that went along with it was very peppery and amazing. Their desserts didn't impress me as much as their savoury stuff, but they were still worth the calories anyway. Love the service and ambience as well. Definitely going back.

Stunning restaurant with seats so comfortable and service so amiable you won't want to leave. A concise menu that covers all bases. We ordered a whole flounder (the fish of the day) which came simply grilled over charcoal but was perfectly cooked (almost never happens) and tasted amazing. Also loved the grilled octopus which was lovely and tender.

A great night. Wasn’t overly busy so we had a table by the door. The flatbread was excellent so we ended up ordering 2 portions. The food was packed with flavour and well presented.

This is my daughter's regular coffee place during the day, but it is also a restaurant for dinner in the evening and not only a run of the mill average restaurant but one that is listed in the Metro Top 50.
We arrive nicely on time at 5.30pm for our reservation and are shown through to our table - which is for 4 people but just set for the 2 of us - so plenty of space.
The menu is not extensive, but this doesn't mean to say that it is too restrictive - indeed in some ways having only a handful of starters & mains plus a few "Specials" to choose from makes life a lot easier.
Unfortunately the 800g fillet "Special" was unavailable so I went for the Confit Duck Leg & my daughter went with the Smoked Ricotta Gnocchi - both were outstanding - as were the Grilled Asparagus & New Potatoes which we ordered as sides.
The Craggy Range Syrah was delightful - going particularly well with my duck!
For dessert we each shared a slice of the Seasonal Fruit Galette along with the Almond Panna Cotta - which simply had to be had with a sticky.
On being unsure on which to have we decided to have 1x glass of the Muscat and 1x glass of the Sauternes - the Muscat was my preference, but both were lovely.
The service was attentive - without being over fussy - and our waitress was fun and chatty with out being over friendly & in your face.
So overall a very pleasant experience indeed -
Great Food matched with excellent wine served by friendly attentive staff.
I will certainly be going back!

It was our first time dining at Hugo Bistro, we went there before a show at the Civic which is just a few minutes walk away. We loved the place and the food and wine were superb. All our dishes were full of flavour and beautifully cooked with great sides and divine sauces. An excellent address!
